What makes you think there are no posh blackguards Humph? I've met several.

No suggestion that your old man was one of course. My father, also born before WW1, didn't call beards beavers. Indeed he even had one himself in the thirties but I think my mother made him shave it off. He kept the moustache though.

>> you want to live in an office? get tiles.
>>
>> Carpet tiles are NOT easy to DIY if you want the job done properly (ie
>> not moving around and getting gappy) Its easier to fit carpet. And you need a
>> floor of unbelievable smoothness and levelness,
>>

I concur.

>> I prefer the American meaning.

That goes without saying ON. You are a former member of the licentious soldiery. But who can take seriously the preferences of someone whose solution to the presence in this country of a seriously malevolent beardie is to suggest that our own great and good be charged with treason?

Tchah!

If the belt is too expensive to change, get rid through the auctions.
For what its worth, I bought a 626 on an S plate from someone selling it on HJ a few years ago. I intended to run it for a few months whilst sourcing a soft top in winter, but kept it for 2 years. It was ultra reliable, the 2 litre petrol averaged 34mpg, and it lived happily in lanes 3 & 4 all day! As a 5 door hatch with all the bells & whistles it was cheap as chips. Bought for £950, sold for £995 with 4 decent tyres & 12 months mot to a friend. All it cost me otherwise were 2 oil changes@ £35 a time.
Might be worth considering one of these as a replacement?

Actually many new installations are now made in flexible plastic - for cold water, hot water, and heating. But to answer your problem, I think that the flexible is not the immediate cause. I think that the installation has resulted in the end of the rigid pipe becoming insufficiently restrained. The water hammer caused by the valve is allowed to move the pipe. Previously, the pipe was restrained at the connection - and anyway, ball valves are less likely to cause a problem, since they close more slowly.
I think that you merely need to clip the rigid pipe to the wall at the junction with the flexible connection.

hth

What would happen if Cameron decided to ignore the ECHR, and just shipped him back to Jordan, on the next available flight with a free jump suit and blacked out goggles?

I ask simply to understand better exactly what the consequences of ignoring the ECHR are.

It is my understanding that our courts are not bound to accept decisions of the ECHR, but must only consider them. Whereas the government are bound to follow the decisions, but beyond that I don't really know much about this.

>> Have you thought about a KIA Rio? There is a new model and there are
>> lots of the previous one at good prices with low miles and a manufacturers seven
>> year warranty.

I haven't thought about much to be honest. I'll have a look. Had discounted used as we would be buying on finance and any big bills down the line would be a problem (although the 7 year warranty makes this point moot). Also needing the fuel/RFL/Maintenance savings to pay a good chunk of that finance.

At the moment, we put aside £50-£60/month to cover servicing. Any replacement would need to be sub £7k to finance.

My thinking was a new i10 may just cost us about the same (or not much more) to run and remove the risk of having to find £600-£1000 for a replacement should the Mazda go pop.>> Have you thought about a KIA Rio?
We've got ceramic tiles in all the rooms with taps and laminate everywhere else. Much to my chagrin when getting out of bed on a cold morning before the heat comes on but "she" likes how it looks apparently. I scurry across a cold "wooden" bedroom floor to a cold tiled bathroom one often at 4.00am prior to a London run. Still, I get my own back by putting my shoes on to shave and stomp about in them enough to ensure she's fully awake ( avoiding any full length mirrors of course, it's not a good look)

However, the one exception is the stairs and landing which remain carpeted. Apparently there's a strong "Elfin-Safety" advice to not use laminate on those areas due to the possibility of slipping.

Hope that helps BT? You could tell her it's illegal or something.

:-)

I'm, slowly, decorating my hall, stairs and landing (it took eighteen months last time), SWMBO's after laminate, but I'm fighting a rearguard. We've got laminate in the dining room where it's fine, but it'll mean plumbing re-arrangements to get it under the skirting in the hall, or beading and I think it'll be too noisy on the stairs.

The previous carpet lasted twenty years. If I could find another like it I reckon it'll outlast me. Is there a measure of carpet durability?

My dads i10 is fine on the motorway, the Fiesta was a 5 star car in its day, always getting rave reviews in the press like the current one does. The i10 drives better and is more powerful. 84bhp is fine on a small car. 1.2 16V 4 cylinder engine is not a lawnmower engine and is far more powerful than many of the engines found in the current Corsas and Fiestas.

There are issues though like the quality of the seat trim is extremely poor, words cannot describe how bad it is, and the steering has limited height adjustment and there is no reach. These issues are common in most city cars.

I would have a look to see if you can get a deal with something like an i20 as they would be more comfortable long term.

In my dads case it is just used for the rare long trip but mostly local city work so the i10 is perfect but for 75 miles a day it might get tiresome as it is a very small car.

The five year warranty was one of the biggest reasons we choose an i10. It was certainly a major factor in buying something brand new instead of used.

My Panda has a three year warranty, but the third is a dealer only warranty and it is not as comprehensive. The Hyundai warranty is impressive, even the clutch plate has a two year warranty but the mileage on the clutch is limited to I think 24,000 miles.

I am not sure a 1 year warranty would be legal these days as cars have to be fit for purpose and if the car breaks after a year you could argue its not fit for the purpose.

Even in the old days, if the head gasket blew on your 18 month old K series surely even if it was out of warranty Rover would have still have liable.

The unpleasant baboon Abu Qatada is apparently allowed to stay here because we are so law-abiding. I don't know why he hasn't been charged with incitement, but there must be legal reasons. The fellow even strokes his hideous beard in public in what looks like deliberate provocation.

What would prevent crowds of small evil-minded boys from following him about and gathering outside his house day and night, chanting 'Beaver!' as they used to do a hundred years ago when they spotted a gent with a beard? They could even be paid to do it, perhaps by a do-gooding Christian organization.

A few days of that might persuade him that having his goolies tweaked by the Jordanian mukhabarrat would be the lesser of two evils. And it would make a small dent in the unemployment figures too.

>> N.B I hope you have all the installation instructions.

There were no instructions with the toilet. I've looked on the lid of the cistern and I can see a screwed thing which has an arrow pointing to it saying "water level adjustment".

>> IMO it is not the flexible connection that is problem but the valve else there
>> would be 10000s and 10000s also complaining as all washing machines and dish washers have
>> flexible hoses.
>>
>>

It all depends on whether the pipework system will satisfactorily tolerate the introduction of a flexible connector, and mine obviously wouldn't. If the pipework isn't rigid then having an abrupt stoppage of the flow will inevitably cause the pipework to vibrate.

>> Get them back to fix it.
>>

Every workman has his standard, and what I got was his/their standard. I want rigid pipe (as I told them at the time) but they wouldn't do it. It was my job at work to supervise mechanical engineering fitters, and asking a shoddy worker to do something a second time invariably didn't result in an improvement. In fact sometimes the original fault was rectified but a second fault appeared. I want a proper plumber who is capable of making soldered joints in copper pipework. Flexible connectors are for DIY purposes and for lazy/unskilled people calling themselves plumbers.

>> I doubt if the flexible connecting pipe has anything
>> to do with pipe hammer. The noise is likely to be from somewhere else in
>> the system, as demonstrated by your washing machine.

I realise that the noise doesn't come from the connector itself, but fitting the connectors ~ one on the washbasin cold tap as well ~ in place of the original copper pipe has introduced flexibility into the pipe system which allows movement of the pipework at some point.

>> Is there no way of tethering the connector, say with a cable tie or p-clip
>> attached to something nearby?
>>

It's not just the flexible connector to the toilet that's the problem ~ there's also a flexible connector on the wash basin taps, the cold one of which is fed from the mains. I've investigated tethering the connectors but there's no obvious way. The inlet pipe to the cold tap is about an inch from the wall. I'm guessing the problem is that the connectors and pipes move vertically, allowing pipes under the floor to vibrate. There was no problem until we had the new bathroom suite. It was fitted by a small company with a really poshly painted van advertising their "multi-trade skills", but I know for a fact that one of the workers doing the plumbing was an electrician.

Testing underway.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/formula1/16914962

Eleven of the 12 constructors - everyone apart from Marussia - are testing in Jerez this week. Nine of them are planning four-day programmes, HRT are only in action on days one and two, and Mercedes - who are using 2011 car - will miss Friday.

Kimi Raikkonen has marked his return to Formula 1 after a two-year absence by going top of the timesheets with a lap of one minute, 19.670 seconds. The 2007 title winner from Finland has joined Lotus (formerly Renault) for 2012 and is one of an unprecedented six world champions on the grid this season.

Scotland's Paul di Resta of Force India and Mercedes' Nico Rosberg are both within six tenths off the pace whole Mark Webber, Jenson Button and Felipe Massa are sixth, seventh and eighth-fastest respectively.

The likes of Sebastian Vettel, Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso and Bruno Senna take over from their team-mates on Thursday.

>> And differences in VED is a minute % of the total
>> cost of motoring.

Looked at rationally, yes. But come renewal every year a couple of hundred quid difference can be hard to swallow.

I've no idea of the differences involved here though!
