Can someone tell me what this (circled in Red) is please?

The part circled in green is sparking/melting.

They are heater plugs to heat the coolant up to enable the heater to give out hot air earlier in the van's warm up cycle.

They should carry quite a heavy current, and there should be a hefty earth wire or metal bracket connecting the unit to earth.

It sounds like the connections need a good clean, and also check the path to earth is OK too.

Edit: Looks like it earths though the bracket.

Also see ebay item: 201006214304 for an example

Nice one NC. I was hunting, bit of a challenge for the afternoon. Struggling :(

+1 re checking and cleaning contacts.

Brilliant, thanks N_C

I'll give it a clean up tomorrow when I'm back at work.

Cleaned it all up, started the van a the 'post' below the one that was sparking yesterday started glowing red hot.

Unplugged/re-plugged them again checking all connections, and all looks OK, but now no heat from the blower.

I guess the unit is kaput.

Is there water in the pipes?, because the glow plugs will get very hot in air.

Any partial/bad connection in the path from the leads, through the connector plug, between the glow plug and the body of the heater unit, and between the body of the heater unit and earth will tend to get hot.

Thanks once again N_C.

The hose where the plugs are was warm when I just went back out to the van, but the hose coming out the matrix was cold - had a (bleed?) screw on it, let some air out and now all seems OK.

Presumably when I first tried this morning, the hose with the plugs in was maybe empty?

Water in the tank was down a little after I bled it, but not much.

Must be taking in air somewhere?

It's worth keeping an eye on it - to find where the coolant is leaking from.

Air in the system, unless its been recently disturbed and not properly bled, isn't a good sign.

I think he means head gasket?

Found a small split in a hose where the spring clamp goes round it, managed to cut the bad bit off and fit it on again.

Will see how it goes. At a hard worked 180k, the van has seen better days.
