 BMW 3-Series E46 - 02 2.0 Safety recalls (Airbags) - De Sisti
Late to the party on this topic, but I have only just received a letter today (Wed 24th December) dated Thur 18th December about the Takata airbag recall. I will have to wait until dealership re-opens on Sat 27th December to make arrangements for them to tend to the issue.

Oh, my car is a December 2002-built BMW E46 320d SE Touring.

you would not believe how many car makers have been affected by this, and for how long. Globaly over 60 million cars were recalled. Bankrupted the company.

I wonder if Stellantis are now regretting buying up so many car manufacturers?

Strange it’s taken so long to get the recall through. I had both my airbags replaced about 2 years ago . It’s a 2002 330ci E 46

I had a Nissan recalled over ten years ago. Never bothered getting it done, as the car had no rattles and squeaks and I didn't fancy the dash being dismantled and re-assembled.
I was prepared to take the risk, particularly as it only affected the passenger airbag.

(at a tangent here) Does anyone ever follow the advice in my Pug 207SW manual saying that airbags should be examined or replaced after 10 years ? Bearing in mind the likely value of the car by then ? I've certainly never considered it, but does it suggest that older vehicles may have non-functioning airbags ?

Modern airbag systems and their associated electronic are generally very reliable. Think I’ve only ever replaced one air bag as a genuine failure. I doubt very much you could actually buy a new set of airbags for a 10 year old ++ car .

Working in the motor trade, I can confirm that it's very much not a thing we do. I'm not even sure how one would examine airbags, other than by looking for obvious damage to the surrounding trims. Most 10+ year-old cars now would have half a dozen or more airbags all around the cabin, it's unrealistic to expect owners to fork out for their replacement even if the parts were available.

I guess the correct functioning of the SRS warning lamp (covered in the MoT test) is all the examination that can be done.

If the manufacturer recommends inspection or replacement after ten years, then I suspect they expect them to still be operational for longer, perhaps twenty years? How long do you intend keeping a car?

Seventeen years and counting ... :-) Been written off cheaply twice and repaired too. It just won't give up.

Update:
According to the dealership's records, my car had passenger and driver airbags replaced on 29 Sept 2014 and 1 Sept 2017 respectively.

I honestly don't recall any discussion about it with them (although I could have forgotten, as it is not something I would have paid for), so I will check my records (I have all receipts for work done on the car since I bought it in Aug 2012.

They said they'd wash the outside of the car as well. I declined the offer until they said it was free.
