Hi all. I’m looking at a Honda Jazz 1.4 I-DSE CVT for my son, as his first car. It’s a 2007 vintage so I know at that age anything is going to be a gamble. The one I’m looking at is a 3 owner car and has done 76k miles. Is there anything specific to these cars that I need to particularly look out for please? Appreciate any input!

Usual Honda reliability, but check transmission for vibration which the cvt models suffer . Also check underneath corrosion and boot area for water ingress that enters from rear body seams . Also don’t forget these are prone to catalyst theft .,

Thank you! Very helpful and appreciated!

For a Jazz mkI that's about 19 years old condition is all.
1)Rust is the biggest killer - particularly check rear wheel arches (terrible mud trap!) , rear inner wings/sills. Oh and any subframes.
2) All brake pipes, some are hard to change
3) Check CVT is smooth , especially setting off.
4) Engines generally bullet proof but really check service history.
5) The mkI (till 08) is very prone to catalyst theft to the point that some insurance companies won't cover them now.
Check previous MOT history online especially anything mentioning rust or brake pipe issues.

Thank you! MOT history isn’t too bad, failed in 2025 on a bulb not working and in 2022 for tyres below 1.6mm, which always concerns me because if you not keeping on top of the only thing keeping you on the road, what else aren’t you doing? But otherwise it looks reasonable, will be interesting to see if it looks as good in the metal as it does in the photos.

Just to update this, and to thank those who commented, we didn’t buy the car. It had a rather damp wheel well in the boot and the rear arches were starting to rust. With a couple of (minor) bodywork imperfections that weren’t shown on the photos, it didn’t feel worth the money. So, the search for a small (preferably automatic) first car continues!

Thanks for the update Tim, as you've discovered jazz's of this vintage are a complete lottery, before Christmas I helped a neighbour look for one, both cars we looked at locally where sheds frankly, she's ended up.with a skoda citigo, pleasant little thing.

Have you considered a Hyundai ix 20 or similar Kia venga . ? Same sort of concept as the Jazz .

If those wheel arches are only starting to rust after 18 years I think you are being a bit picky. Also minor imperfections - if they are that minor you could fix them for little money. There may not be many perfect 18-y-o cars for sale out there !
