 FIAT - Spider 80 2.0 starting after long non use - sherlock47
Posted on HJ as well, as Technical here is not so heavily viewed.

I was asked to have a quick look yesterday at a Fiat Spyder (indeterminate year), but must be a late model as it is lhd with American bumpers and auto transmission. American sourced?

It has been standing for about 4 years and has been started sucessfully in the past, about once every 12 months. It is fitted with a Bosch injection system that appears to be single point? Easy start allows it to fire up (probably on the ether) and then will sputter on 1/2 cylinders when cranking, but not run. The battery is remarkably lively for a 4year old battery that has been abused. I have suggested putting new petrol in but is there a way of bleeding the old petrol from the pump and fuel lines? My next move is to check whether there is a reasonable spark, but yesterday tools were negligible and poor lighting in the the subterranean garage. Can anybody with specific model knowledge tell me what fuel pump is used and where it is located. Access to the engine bay looks pretty difficult!

I can't find any EU single-point 2.0 Fiat engines at all. Any idea of a rough year and the engine code off the silver plate?

If it's single-point you should be able to see it injecting fuel into the throttle-body. If it runs on sniff, then the spark should be OK.

If it has an electric fuel pump; then it should have a return line from the throttle-body and the fuel should circulate when cranking.

Thanks for your comments. I have done further investigation (Internet, not real!) and it would appear that it is a Bosch L Jet system

www.mirafiori.com/faq/fiatFI_may2002.pdf

A common failure appears to be that the air flow sensor can stick, not allowing the pump to run after releasing the ignition key from the starting position. I will investigate that first. I guess that I should be able to hear the pump running?

My first reaction was that if it runs on 'sniff' that the electrics are ok, but the ether is so volatile, I just wondered if it would run on compression ignition?

The visibilty is so poor it is difficult to see the individual injectors. I will have a good look again this week!

Let's see if you get your answer on here or HJ first... Screwloose only posts here though (and other sites but not HJ).

Sniff won't fire under normal petrol compression - you have a spark.

Drain the fuel off at the rail end; [there should be a nice big electric pump to help - just bridge the relay] and add a little fresh fuel with a tin of injection cleaner in it.

Then tap the injectors repeatedly with a light rod to unstick them.

Any idea of a year?

80 in the subject line, (1980?), if that's any help?

I skim posts far too quickly to notice anything as obvious as that.......

Sounds like K jetronic or possibly L jetronic(which is K with input from EGO sensor). One starting problem on these is the "fast idle"device failing or seizing-it's an air-bypass valve.Fuel pump is usually alongside tank.Pump power comes from relay which is energised by rotation of distributor.

jc2 - It is the L Jet (see above).

SL The 1980 date is approx, I am waiting to see the paperwork to get an exact date - or VIN.

We now have it running very roughly- no power and missing. But have not had an in depth look at it. New petrol was the key to starting it. The first thing will be to look at the possibility of a stuck injector or the air bypass valve.

Thanks for comments - I will let u know the outcome next weekend.

I have made an untimely return from S of France (chauffeuring no fly passengers), so did not get the opportunity to investigate further. I will post further on next visit.
