97 TDi Dicso needs new engine, it seems (not mine, my pretty, horsey neighbour).

I'm guessing it's £600 odd for the labour at an indy? About ten hours? Engines seem to be about £500 - what else would you do when swapping out in terms of belts etc?

Some landrover (diesel) engines have very much better reputations than others. I'm not an LR fan so I'm not the person to ask, but if the engines being changed anyway it might be worth considering the options - I think you can put pretty much any of them in. I'd certainly put in a call to a LR specialist.

I'd check the chassis very carefully before investing this sort of money in an old discovery!

I've done a fair bit with Discoveries of this era. I'm guessing at 97 it's a facelift 300TDi? If so values vary wildly between £1500 and £3500 for MOT'd examples depending on spec/history/condition.

If it is truly a Discovery 2 it should be a 98 and have a TD5.... and be worth up to £6500.

An exchange engine from Turners (the only folks I'd trust) is around £2500 for the 300 or almost £4000 for the TD5. I'd not buy any used engine unless I'd seen it running and knew the history.... the cost/effort of fitting is too much to take a risk on a wrong un.

Fit new timing belt kit and clutch at the same time and resolve any signs of water leaks while the engine is out.

10hrs is about right for someone who has the kit and knows the job and you ought to find some LR indy who'd be happy to do the job for around £400-£500

Unless this Discovery is a truly excellent example and/or a SDeries 2 TD5 the best thing may be to sell it as is and buy another which can at least be test driven and examined. The advice to check carefully for chassis rust before spending anything on it is good. Rear chassis around the fuel tank/towbar, boot floor and inner wings all need checking.

TD5 is a great performer and sounds wonderful but I hear it's very unreliable, true?
