Looks like Privilege this year (I'd welcome any comments). SAGA have done us well for the past few years, but now want over a hundred quid more to make me the policy holder (instead of SWMBO, so I can retain my NCD).

No useful input but somehow putting my daughter on the policy as well as SWMBO brought the cost down by a few pounds - she has used my car in a real emergency, and once when she came to Le Mans with me, and it always costs £10 or £20 to add her.

I'm sure you can add her to yours too if you want :-)

I'd need your daughter's details ;>)

Family man carrying people he cares about, being told to keep the car in good shape by his family compared to a single man driving himself around and getting lairy listening to music which incites him.

Saga, RIAS & Castle Cover overcharging for House & Car Cover

Telegraph article

Specialist Pensioner Insurers inflated Premiums compared to " normal Insurers"who might charge HUNDREDS less for similar cover.

I think we all know that loyalty means being shafted when it comes to insurance.

They're all run by shifty but astonishingly wealthy anonymous people with scarred faces who sit behind large mahogany desks stroking white cats.

In my head anyway. ;-)

Would that be one of AC's cats?

>> Saga, RIAS & Castle Cover overcharging for House & Car Cover

Until this year, SAGA were the most competitively priced for the past few years. They didn't use to hike their prices for loyalty either. I'll have to see what their home cover does later.

I had a brief call to their call centre asking why they'd included protected NCD and requested they removed it. The reply was it was standard to include it and it couldn't be removed. I pointed out it was probably making their quote non-competitive, but they wouldn't budge.

A son was broken into - total was under £1500 - premium the following month leapt from £400 to £900 & others did not like the claim record (only 1 in 10 yrs).

He pointed out on HP he could have paid the claim cost back with less than 2 years premiums or 3 years increase.

On the phone they dropped it to some £600. 6/7 years he is back to some £400 house & contents.

I am with LV car insurance and due renewal soon : normally they are very competitive but I always run a check online to be sure. Wife is with More Than and likewise they have proved consistent over the years. We are each under £200 pa so little to be gained from moving.

Funnily enough she too was with LV for ages until she found that renewal was more than their own online quote. Called them and they wouldn't match it! They suggested she let it lapse and then renew online. That's when she moved to More Than.

On the other hand we had home insurance for many years with More Than and their premium shot up after one minor content claim (about £200). I called them but they wouldn't budge. Went elsewhere for less. They still badger me with offers to renew.

Just shows you can't generalise as to the best company.

My circumstances will be different from yours, not having a car, but when I was 'phoning around recently AXA were the cheapest I could find at £608 fully comp, the rest were nearly £100 dearer! - I hope this may drop alot when I get the first 12 months under my belt! ;-)

I'm with SwiftCover (it also handles my house and contents insurance) and my car insurance went up by around £60 in July compared to last year.

Did the normal price comparison checks at the time, but the best I could do was only about £20 less. So I stayed with SwiftCover as the saving would have been minimal, but requiring a lot of time and effort for no real gain.

Saga car insurance is very competitive. And their repair service is EXCELLENT.

Our house insurance was up for renewal. Last year Saga quoted £730 ish. I ended up with Hasting Direct at £250.

This year Hastings quoted £303. Saga sent me a letter saying £230 ish - based on "your house details". They quoted £750 eventually. NFU quoted £680.

I insured with Esure for £170...

(All quotes based on same cover etc except NFU who offer very exceptional cover in case of house damage or flooding - see TV ads..)...

Draw your own conclusions.

I've had several of their quotes over the years and none have been of any use to me.

Diabolically expensive and I regard myself as an insurance company's dream customer....:-)

Me also.... Saga have never been remotely competitive. I have a 'friendly' rural postcode, car garaged, limited miles, SD & P only, no work commuting, long period of no claims. I change insurers most years, but currently back with the IAM insurance people I think.

Same happened to the old guy next door to us. Been insured with SAGA for some years but when the premium got to £800 he asked what we pay - ours is £200!

He then, as old people sometimes do, had a mega letter writing battle with the CEO's office at SAGA and they suggested something wasn't quite right and it ought to have been £600. Following year he got the £200 letter from SAGA too. Very standard house and cover so no reason for the actual premium to be any different.

I had that with LV a few years ago. What I didn't realise is that I was on one of their old fashioned type of policies - it had no mileage limit, included European cover and courtesy car as standard and various other things that I can't remember now. The new policy was much more pared down.
