Talk about an old banger! - VxFan
A banged up car with no windows, mirrors and dented front and sides was pulled over by police in Cheshire.

The wreck of a car was still being driven on the roads, despite looking like something out of a junkyard.

The old banger, which also had extensive damage to all areas of its bodywork, was once a red Rover but is now a patchwork of blue and yellow.

Personally I don't think it is a Rover. Anyone care to take a guess?

I'd say it's a rover 400.

Looks a lot like a Rover 400 to me...

Although, the rear quarter window isn’t right. A montego perhaps?

Montego I reckon. I had a red one (company car), could have been mine ...
Clearly been used for banger racing.

Almost definitely a Rover 400, the saloon version that ran from 1990 to 1995. There's not much to go on admittedly but the giveaway is the door handles which are perfectly flush with the door skin, whereas the Montego's were always more proud.

Rear pillar looks wrong for a 400.

I can see more resemblance to a Montego.

First thought was a mid-80s Escort.

I'm certain.

Not in the DM picture I'm looking at. You can quite clearly see the rounded rectangular shape of the recessed handle pocket overlapping the door skin. Those are quite distinctive and don't resemble either the 400 or the Montego pictures I can find.

Its the *old* Rover 200, isn't it?

One of those old Vauxhall Novas with a boot?

That's the model I was referring to, although the 400 which was the saloon version. Launched in 1989 but the saloon was a year later.

Definitely not a Montego: Montego never had door lock barrels in the handle, they were always to the left of the handle in the door skin.

Also the C pillar is too thin for a Montego and the rear quarter-light is the same height as the other windows in the photo which is correct for a 400 but on the Montego it was higher:

I thought it was one of these:

But now I think that the rear pillar is too thin to be the Ford, and it's the Rover 216.

I've had two of each over the years.

I looked at your Escort post and couldn't make up my mind whether or not it was the Escort or the Rover 216.

I *think* its the Rover though because of the location of the keyhole.

It's neither since the car in the photo is clearly a saloon. Look at the metal structure behind the rear seats. In the 200 hatchback that would be a 'cardboard' parcel shelf.

For a moment I was thinking maybe Orion (the booted version of the Escort) but it had keyholes in the doorskins as well and not in the handle. Also the Orion never had rear quarter-lights, opting for a much thicker C pillar.

It's a 400. I would bet money on it.

On a tangent, I drove several Montegos and 200/400s in the late 80s and early 90s, the Montego actually turned into quite a decent car by that time, the fleet operator liked the 2.0 diesel particularly which although noisy was bombproof. The Rovers were much liked as well, particularly with the Honda engine.

Meh, its some variant of an old 200. I'm sure that you're right, I just lose interest at any level of detail beyond that.

I had a Montego. Mid to late 80s, I think. I did not love it. Though I knew nothing of diesels, I don't know much now! Mine was the EFi.
