Six points on his licence, and nabbed doing 97 in a 70. Normally a 6 month ban, but a grovelling letter and he gets away with a 2 month ban.
Apparently it would affect his upcoming filming schedule for The Trip, where he has to drive on film. No sheet Sherlock.
I’d have thought that with that in mind, and 6 points already, he’d be extra careful not to be a silly boy.
Bet if it was me, driving 6 days a week between my retail shops, visiting Cash & Carry 3 times a week, and home deliveries 3 nights a week, I doubt my ban would have been reduced.

I got hairdryered at 90mph in a 60mph zone in 2005 - £210 and 5 points (licence was clean prior to that).

Did send a grovelly letter about needing my car for house calls - no idea if that made any difference ;-)

If you already had 6 points on your licence, would you still have done 90 in a 60 knowing that a 6 month ban would be likely ?

How do drivers get away with loads of points?

Googling says he’s worth about £20m. Whether that’s accurate or not he is wealthy. He could afford a driver for six months.
As for The Trip, any driving could be simulated. Or, as he’s playing a fictionalised version of himself, they could just incorporate it into the script. A driver character could add a new element to what was once a very good show but has become a bit tired in later series.
Anyway a punishment is meant to be a hardship.

I was done for "speeds of 98 to 102" in 1991. Different regime. £100 & 3 points.

The local mags were actually dishing out bans for over 100. The officer said he'd clocked me at something over 120, so I asked what I would be reported for. He said he'd report 98-102 to give me a chance.

Sounds reckless I suppose. 6.30am on a Sunday, nothing on the road - except an unmarked Granada sitting at the top of a slip road. Downhill! I had actually slowed down to just under 100 when I saw the white car until it became clear that it was catching me.

I went to court, pleaded guilty and mitigated, or rather the solicitor did. Solicitor was useless and said I only had 3 points on my licence which wasn't true, I had none and was obliged to interrupt and correct her!.

The mags retired to consider (for effect I assume) and when they came back the chair gave me such a wigging about young men (I was 37) thinking the law didn't apply to them that I thought the black cap would be the next thing, and I was certain I was getting the ban.

It was an interesting experience from which I learnt not to overdo it but I'm sorry to say I've had a few tickets since then. But never more than 6 points concurrent. I'm clear at the moment!

My 3 have just expired, 89 on the M25, that was when I realised that some (only some so far) HADECS are active even if no variable speed limits are displayed.

I was done for 108 om the M6 probably around 2001. I was working away at the time, on an MOD project in Glasgow, and realised (till then) I could do it faster door to door than flying - about 4 hours on a clear Sunday. The speedo, on cruise control, was showing 120 so 10% error. This would have been in the Omega MV6 I mentioned a few weeks back.

I was caught in Cumbria and had to attend court in Carlisle, some time after the Glasgow stint had ended, but the project re-grouped in Newcastle by then so I took the car up there, got a train across to collect my 2 week ban (and a modest fine - $30 IIRC) and just didn't go home for a couple of weekends. Turned out not too painful.

Since then I think I've had only one "event" - which ended up with me being on the same speed awareness course as SWMBO - I was caught in Liverpool when away with a mate and she was caught locally. Quite a coincidence! Been clean for a few years now...

The benefit of traffic police vs cameras.

Once stopped doing 75mph in a 30 mph area coming out of town at 6.30 on a sunny and quiet Sunday morning.

Police stopped me, had a pleasant but obviously direct conversation, and sent be on my way suitably chastened. They used some judgement and discretion given there was no risk to any other road users at that time, and no evidence of drugs, alcohol defective vehicle etc.

Camera would send a quick snap with a prosecution inevitable. Bring back jam sandwiches!!
