Jim Moylan died last month.
99.999999% of drivers have never heard of him?

In 1989 he invented the dashboard arrow that tells you which side the petrol flap is on!

I recall something about the nozzle of the pump icon indicating filler cap side, or is that a myth?

Implementations of the idea have varied over the years/makes

I’m surprised they haven’t invented one for EVs . Charging ports seem to be all over the place with no standardisation.

Given he worked for Ford it’s ironic that some older Ford models (e.g some Zephyr and Zodiac models) had the filler concealed behind the rear licence plate.

On a similar theme I went to check the oil level on my new to me Saab 9-5. No dipstick visible so I checked the manual expecting some warning light arrangement. Nope, it was attached to the underside of the oil filler cap.

Back in the day I used to drive my Dad's mkIV Zodiac where the filler flap was indeed in the centre as part of the full width rear reflector. I used to love pulling up at the old petrol stations where an attendant filled you up to see what happened.

I had the same setup on a 1978 Holden Kingswood. Very handy - you didn't have to queue up for a pump at the side you wanted. You could just go to any pump.

.... which is actually true at most (all?) petrol stations. The hoses are long enough to reach the other side of the car so long as you stop in the right place. I guess most people haven't realised that.

That's how I remember it from back in my ICE days (and of course the smaller cars I now get as holiday rentals).

It's so much cleaner and easier (though admitted slower) just having it done for me on my drive while I sleep!! :-)

I do that quite often, especially with our two cars having fillers on opposite sides. I find the biggest nuisance is being able to read the pump display because the builders put it beyond the front of the parked car !!

I upset the driver of an MX5 who was blocking the entrance to a filling station waiting for a pump to become vacant on their right side. I pointed out pumps were available, to no avail. When they eventually moved forward, I deliberately chose a pump on my wrong side.
The MX5 filler cap was situated above the boot lid, slightly offset to one side!

The MX-5 filler is on the left. I don't stop on the wrong side in case I end up dragging part of the hose over the paint.

Some petrol & diesel hybrids have 2 Moylan Arrows
1 for petrol/diesel
1 for EV connector
