 EV - rumours - Ethanedwards
Rumour has it that our financial genius Chancellor is prepared to offset somewhat the damage her ill advised 3p per mile tax has already caused. She is proposing to cut the 20% Vat public charger operators are forced to charge when reselling electricity to us EV owners.

All good eh? Well its welcome, but 95% of us only use public chargers when on exceptional long trips or in an emergency. So for us that almost exclusively charge at home its less useful. That's one reason I bought a new EV with 280m range an increase of 90m or so. For me that wasn't a need but a would like to have.

Oh and this December one third of all new cars were BEV.

I read recently that building regs require all new build properties to have an EV charging point.

Was someone having a laugh?

We bought a bungalow 18 months ago as a do-er upper to totally refurb. It's currently rented out till we downsize..

The local electrician who did a total rewire also put in cabling in for a charger point.

Well it makes common sense. All new builds should also include solar panels.

Absolutely.

The UK government has confirmed that the Future Homes Standard will mandate solar panels as standard for new homes built from 1 October 2026. This regulation aims to promote renewable energy generation and reduce carbon emissions, aligning with the government's broader net-zero targets. The standard will require solar PV systems to cover at least 40% of the new home's ground floor area, with flexibility for developments where solar is impractical due to shading or other constraints. The move is expected to spark a "rooftop revolution," helping families save hundreds of pounds on energy bills annually.

Thought they did with solar panels?

We installed solar panels here (Cheshire) 14 years ago, and despite being expensive compared to today's prices, they paid for themselves after about 10 years, as predicted. The interesting thing is that we have just received warning from our grid suppliers (Scottish Power) to expect a regular two-yearly inspection visit soon to check the meter. It seems that was not deemed necessary before, so I assume it has been mandated by someone ?

We submit readings quarterly on request. I suppose it has potential to submit false readings.

The difference is that solar output is fairly predictable, as sunshine is measured all over the UK. All you might claim is that you had a faulty panel, but that wouldn't help much !

I was told of someone who regularly submitted high readings just before rates went up and correct ones at the next time. Claimed they were never confronted over it.
