A friend of mine is about to sell up in the UK ( Edinburgh area) but keep a car in the UK ( taxed, insured, MOT) for when he visits his children in the same area, maybe 6 times a year, two weeks at a time.
He’s told me he is thinking of storing it in a metal container, which I don’t think is a good idea. He’s spoken to a car storage company and they want £54 a week…his car in Spain, off airport and undercover, is a quarter that price. And it’s a 20 yo VW diesel…he reckons it’s worth keeping as it’s known quantity and saves a lot of rental hassle, especially as he won’t know exact departure dates when he arrives in the UK..depends on weather, children, visiting friends etc.
Maybe join a car rental scheme but may not work if he wants a car 2/3 weeks at a time, 6 times a year ?
Any thoughts please ?

I can't see how sorting out a short term hire care is too much hassle compared to storing, taxing etc a car in a country he doesn't live in.
How does he plan on getting to the car from airport?
It sounds more like he wants an excuse to keep a car he likes rather than any logical arguement.

Probably because he won’t book a return flight . I don’t imagine a Uber from Edinburgh airport to a storage facility within 10 miles will be too expensive, and without knowing UK hire car prices, 6 x 2/3 weeks will be more expensive than tax, insurance & annual oil change & MOT (£500 tops).

But you did ask for an opinion :) Mine is he wants to keep the car and is trying to justify it, which is fine. If he wants to keep his drop top then he should keep it.
If he's flying backwards and fwds several times a year, it doesn't sound like he's short of money and either I doubt it'll make much difference to overall finances either way.

There are plenty of home owners within a few miles of Edinburgh Airport who offer driveway parking from £65+ per month. Not under cover but better than stree t parking.
If faced with a similar choice would swap a 10-20 year old VW Eos for something small and modern which should start despite up to a couple of months exposed to the elements.
Hoping a 10-20 year old car which never sold in great numbers will always start, pass MoTs, with any spares needed available off the shelf is a triumph of hope over reality in my opinion.

He will need to inform DVLA of his change of address. Assuming the address notified to the DVLA is the one for the car registration and insurance, he will need to explain to the insurance company that he is no longer a UK resident and then they might refuse cover.
I would go for the simple option and sell it.

Can you have a storage unit as a registered address? I guess most just use a friend or relative's address.
