Do you leave your name and address in your car? - Iffy
Looking through my handbook wallet in the car today, I noticed a letter from the dealer which had my name and address at the top of it.

My instinctive reaction is I would prefer my name and address not to be left in the car, so I removed the letter.

Is there any risk or benefit to telling a thief or someone who comes across your abandoned car who you are and where you live?

Or doesn't it matter much either way?

Hadn't thought of it as a risk, I keep a photocopy of my driving licence and certificate of insurance well concealed in my car.

Don't know why, if computer says no..........

Guess the risk is that if your car is broken into the thieves have your address should they wish to pay you a visit to get the keys

Ha Ha....but you get my point if it was something newish with onward value. Think you have been unlucky having your car broken into by an oportunist, then a day or two later you get burgled and car gone....

They are welcome to try, Get past the locks and the alarm will wake the whole street, and I am sure I could put my hand on a golf bat within a few seconds. I would treat intruders as a death threat and treat them accordingly.

I have programmed HOME on the satnav as the big house at the top of the next road running parallel to me with a couple of Dobermans in the garden. Should prove interesting if the pinch my car from the local carpark

Mine is the car park of the nearby local police station. I like the dog option though!

Dont you guys know where you live then?

No

If my car is stolen, then police should be able to find my details from DVLA if required.

OK Z, I'll bite.

If I am in a city I don't know, it will point me in the right direction and put me on a motorway going in the right direction, assuming I am going home of course.

You've not answered the question, Zeddo.

Would I find your name and address if I broke into the dog kennel?

I don't know, and there is no way I am going to go through my car with a fine tooth comb to find it and remove it.

I really don't think its much of a risk - tho you clearly do.

edit. If one had an outcome on life that everything like that was a risk one would never leave the home.

Got my name and address on documents in the car. My car spends 50% of its life parked at my home so not sure what the risk is....
Don't keep house keys with car keys though.
Sat nav has home programmed as my home address.

Wonder how I can sleep at night

Not really, same as you, I don't see a big risk.

There might be another bit of paper in the car with my details on it, but I'm not going to gut the thing to find out.

I don't think there's anything with my address on in the glovebox, nothing else is ever left anywhere in the car. I've got nothing worth pinching at home anyway :)

CBA...either way.

Would there be anything worth nicking from someone in a retirement home anyway...? Some trinkets and ornaments, a couple of blankets, maybe a gnome?

Slippers?

As far as I know there's nothing in my car which has my name and address on it. However, the DVLA will, for a small fee, reveal these details if someone gives them a plausible reason for asking. www.dft.gov.uk/dvla/data/relinfo/howtorequest.aspx

Yes, I have paperwork in the car with name & address. Service invoices etc. Never thought it a risk and still don't.

Is the risk supposed to be of the car being stolen or the house being broken into?

If someone steals the car and needs to know the name and address of the real owner, the DVLA or a blackmarket database link will easily provide.

If someone knows your name and address, what is the risk? There are are millions of names and addresses in the phone book just waiting to be burgled. Knowing that Fred Bloggs of 37 Acacia Avenue Slough has a Ford Focus doesn't increase the risk that his TV will be stolen.
