Driving in Fiji! - Auntie Lockbrakes
Just spent 10 days on the main Fijian island. Had a rental car for a day: a 2006 Yaris with 187,000km on the clock! It was a 1.3 automatic, 4-door saloon version. It actually wasn't too sluggish on the generally-flat road, and the national speed limit is only 50mph anyway. Slowed a bit on inclines, and although there was quite a bit of clonking from the front end (suspension?), it was actually a reasonable drive! Did 230kms on the main highway - all single carriageway of course with some fairly poor surfaces. Very little traffic, a pleasant drive tbh.

Drove 20-odd km after dark - scary! Animals and people lurking on the verges, potholes almost invisible, no streetlights,... Wouldn't go out at night again!

Did another 250km round trip a couple of days later, but this time with a driver and his 2004 Corolla estate. Used import from Japan (as are most cars in the country) and this car seemed to cope with the worn roads much better. Only 57000km on the clock - must make a difference!

Got the rental for under 50 quid for the day all-in. Petrol has just passed the 90p/litre mark and the locals are feeling the pinch...
