Similar thing in Bowness on Windermere, I think. Folks having trouble with remote key fobs.

Turned out to be a wireless credit card reader in a nearby shop/cafe.

Does it mean we are better off locking car with inserting key physically in door handle?

Depends, some cars only have a keyhole as an emergency backup.

I find that I can't unlock/lock my car with the remote for about 5 seconds after arming/disarming the wireless house alarm. Just means I have to pay attention and make sure the car does lock rather than pressing the button and assuming it worked, not really a problem.

and this is news, is it?

My Opel won't open/close at three locations I know of - near the Fire Station/traffic department; near a civic centre (also fire dept) elsewhere in town, and near a shop close to where an ex-girlfriend lived.
Fortunately I have an over-ride switch fitted, in an obscure place in the car. But I can see it being a problem in mass-produced vehicles where scrotes would know where any over-ride switches were located.
