Now then,

We're thinking of changing the Punto for a Colt 1.5 diesel automatic. Does anybody have one? Good? Bad?

Cheers!

I clipped a brand new one in 2005 in a car park.

It had expensive bumpers.

I can remember when all Mitsubishis were Colts.

Nah they were all Mitsubishis, but they were all sold by the Colt Car company.

Had a 1.3 petrol manual one as a courtesy car a couple of years ago. Depends what you're used to but it's pretty nasty if that 'what' is something biggish and civilized. I'll be charitable and give it 'easy to park' but Mrs Beest was less keen - her verdict included the words 'biscuit' and 'tin' among others I won't repeat here.

Can't imagine how a diesel automatic would be in such a small car. For balance, I actually quite like the Punto.

Aye, the Punto is a cracking car and we're really happy with it. But I do a 50 mile commute every day and Mrs B is having trouble with her left arm, meaning an autobox is more likely.

How's about something like this Wolfie ~

Do you mean the current model, or are you going used?

Mrs F has a 3 door 1.3 CZ2 previous model, and we both quite like it. However that's probably mainly due to the (relatively) spirited performance from the gutsy engine, which is much better than the 1.1 I test drove. I suppose it is a bit plasticky inside.

My condolences, I didn't know Mrs. WDB had Tourette's syndrome :-) ;-) smiley faces..

Link below includes strong language... including "biscuit!" from the young lady with Tourette's

Dog - I didn't know that the Yaris came in that flavour. The M-i-L has a Yaris (petrol, manual though) and it seems to be a nice little car.

Focus - aye, it'd be a used one. Probably 2008/9. Must admit that I'd look elsewhere if it was plasticky inside. I likes my creature comforts.

Crikey! what's a man to do if he (like me) wouldn't even consider an automated manual or a CVT :-(

Me neither, but i could be tempted by the Toyota/Lexus hybrid drive yet.

A quick tale of gearbox from hell from only last night.

Had to do a manoeuver in an automated manual loaded artic last night, tried to get it to move off when on the turn with the three trailer axles not wanting to go anywhere other than straight as they do..
Three times it started off in first only as soon as it moved it wanted to do an immediate upchange to second, obviously being the type of box it is the change time is too long winded and by the time second engaged the truck stopped and the bending of the trailer tyres pulled it back to it's start position, so the engine didn't have the power to pull it in second.

Eventually i locked it in manual crawler gear and it just managed to do the job.

Premium make too, who's offerings 10 to 40 years ago were tough simple and durable and bear no relation whatsoever to these white elephants, i had a particular one of them in late 80's and it would cruise at 95mph, allegedly.;)

I did a bit of 'lorry' driving (5 years) back in the 70's, nothing BIG like you (and that woman) though :)

Mostly just Bedford TK and Leyland 'Terror' etc. but the thought of an automated manual gearbox on an artic leaves me all of a quiver!!

Not an easy job lorry driving - especially these days :( and quite poorly paid, for what is after all a professional job.

It's not viewed as a professional job by most people D, it never really has been outside the industry, and in many sections within it, this is still the case imo.

Pay depends on where you live and what you do, as with most trades you have to specialise and get yourself a good reputation within your field and or a checkable history if you want the best paid jobs which usually entail hard specialist work and, dare i say this, usually a unionised workforce, and still won't happen unless you live in the right area, or have a good bit of luck on your side.

No truer thing ever said, people, that quote should be preached to your children every day of their lives from day one, more truth than anything else you could tell them.

As for me i've had me share of good luck and been in the right place at the right time, and very grateful for it.;)

It would have to be used - they don't make that model anymore, which is perhaps significant. The AMT boxes where known to be troublesome. as they are in the SMART ForFour which uses the same setup.

We have 1.1CZ1 Colt in the family and there is a lot of hard plastic in the car. But to be fair it was a cheap car - 5dr with a/c new was £7500 in 2007. Honda Jazz is nicer but costs 50% more. You pays your money....

We have one of the earliest 1.1 "Red" examples of the current series, so called as that was the only colour you could have at the time. (Our 4th. Colt in all, may soon get another). It has proved an excellent, thoroughly reliable work horse. It is surprisingly roomy inside (apart from the boot) and happy cruising on the motorway for long periods. We have also taken it to France. The engine is small but quite adequate (chain cam to boot). At the time the 1.3 version was reviewed as inferior to it. There is indeed a large area of black plastic to the dash and rear view is such that parking may be difficult. The driver's seat slide is limited if the back seat is folded all the way down.

We are also considering the new Picanto, which has a bigger boot (on paper at least). We have not yet driven it however.

True for the previous model as well. So I was quite surprised at how much better I found the 1.3 after driving them both - subjective of course, but I suggest not ruling it out without driving one.

..doesn't the back seat slide in yours? Obviously you can't have max boot space and max legroom at the same time!

Yes, but I was refering to the standard size.

I assume a flat cap and a tartan blanket will be on your Christmas list this year then?
