How far back does a car model go - PeterS
The thread-drift (who'd have thought it...) in the cityrover topic set me thinking about models/variants of cars, and how many iterations of any given model I've owned or driven over the years. Off the top of my head, I think I've driven every iteration of :

Fiesta, from the 1976 Mark 1 to the current one. Mostly bog standard models, though I did briefly own a 1984 XR2i in white!
FWD Escort, the best of which were a 1983 RS1600i in white and a 1984 XR3i in caspian (I think) blue. Worst was a 1992 LX
Mondeo
Astra
FWD Cavaliers, leading in to Vectras and the Insignia, but not the earlier RWD one(s?)
Audi A3 (though there have only been two with a third imminent, since 1996, which seems like a long lifecycle)
Audi A4, from the 1994 B5 to the current one - mostly TDIs!
BMW 3 series, from the E21 to the E90. Need to drive the F30 ASAP!!
Mercedes E class, from the W123 to the current W212
VW Golf, including GTi versions of the mark 1,2,3 and 4.

A fair few have been company cars, either mine or my parents, and plenty have been hire cars/courtesy cars too. However, I'm not old enough (!) to have driven very many pre eighties cars, so there must be plenty of cars whose lineage goes back into the '70s and beyond that people here will have driven. You'll see I've cheated by ignoring the RWD Escorts and Cavaliers - I've never driven them :-) Likewise the Mondeo’s predecessor the Cortina, though I did drive (and crash) a late model Sierra in 1992, 'belonging' to my boss at the time

The French and Italians seem to change model names/models more frequently, so it’s harder to do the same, but I suppose there are models before the 205/206/207 than extend the line backwards; likewise the 305/309/306 class too, but too early for me to remember what they are, never mind having driven them

Any other long running models that people have driven every iteration of?

Peter

I can lay claim to a couple of Fords.

Escorts from the early 70s (just), to a last of the line estate, which I didn't think was a bad car.

PAS, locking and windows made it well-equipped.

Every Cortina, the original 'CND' rear light model, several mark twos and Coke bottle mark threes, and a couple of early 80s mark fours.

Driven every Fiesta from the 1989 model to the 2002 model. Not driven the latest one though. Nearly all the Fiestas had the pushrod engines, it is the only engine worth having on a banger Fiesta.

Not driven many cars really, pretty much in order:-
Punto 55 SX
Corsa 1.0 (base spec) nasty car
Corsa 1.4 16V (far better)
Renault Clio 1.2 16v (mk3)
Fiesta (2002 model) 1.2 16v
Renault Clio MK4 1.2 16v (passed in this car)
Ford Fiesta MK3 1.0
Ford Fiesta M3.5 1.1 X2
Ford Fiesta MK4 1.3 X2
Ford Ka
Ford Focus 1.6 16v
Corsa 1.2 16v
Kia Picanto 1.0 (horrible)
Fiat Panda MK3 1.1 (x2)
Hyundai I10 1.2 16v

So I suppose the car I am most familiar with is the FIesta, I have owned five cars myself, three Fiestas, one Corsa and my Panda.

I've owned the following examples of each car range:

9x Cortina/Sierra/Mondeo: 77/R, 81/W, 84/B, 85/Cx2, 91/J, 95/M, 99/T and 05/55.

4x Escort Mk3/6: 81/W, 83/A, 85/C and 97/R.

3x Cavalier Mk2/3: 82/Yx2, 93/K.

plus another 20-odd assorted bangers over the years.

I've driven all iterations of the Ford Cargo 7.5t lorry from 86/D up to 60 plate Iveco version, many many examples of every Mercedes Sprinter model and all Transits since the 1985 streamlined shape.
