It just goes to show that even when everything is done by the book things can still go wrong.

I recall a traffic jam on the A40 going into London caused by a low loader with a large diameter 'cotton reel' on its edge on the back.
The wagon had reached a metal footbridge at Hillingdon, but was unable to pass under it.
Happily, the driver had crept towards the bridge, so no damage was done.
The load looked to be only a few inches too high to fit under.

One report said a 100 ft lorry and 40 m beams ~ obviously the reporter couldn't decide whether to be imperial or metric. Similarly, the other report said a 130 ft lorry and 40 ft beams, and " beat us by 600 mm"! It's a good job I'm old enough to be able to think in either units. Incidentally, I wonder whether the two beams were really of different lengths.
