If so, I don't like their DIY check in at Gatwick!

I do like the crew offering to divert the plane when I was taken quite ill on a flight!

Deicing can be with water, only restriction is that the treatment is symmetrical*. Don't know if that happened here. You can occasionally end up in a warm destination with ice on the wings (often when tankering fuel in).

I wouldn't do this but I also don't fly for Turkish Airlines.
