It seems Erdogan's agenda is gradually to erode Mustafa Kemal Ataturk's foundation of modern Turkey as a secular republic.

By forging ahead with Islamification he knows he's steering the country further away from Europe and his recent spat with Macron of France, who, like other French politicians before him, is seeking a way to manage Islam in his country, given that France is also a secular Republic, shows that Turkey has diminishing common ground with western/European society.
