Ok, everyone would have died in a gruesome fiery ball and their remains never to be seen again, BUT, watching the dynamic of this thing manoeuvring and coming back to land is truly astonishing, the stuff of Gerry Anderson.

Love the abbreviation RUD

Rapid Unscheduled Disassembly.....

He'll make it work. In two years it will be normal to do space travel as he envisages. The pace of change and improvement is astonishing.

Some of his previous efforts have been amazing!

Landing a booster on a floating barge for example- looks like sci-fi!

The large rocket seems to have pivoted very quickly, I wonder if too much stress was put on the structure of the machine?

Have you seen his low cost zero gravity detectors? They tend to be a fluffy toy that floats free at the appropriate time.

Seems one may have more success travelling to Mars than mainland Europe after Jan 1. Maybe not getting back in one piece though.

I read that and realised I didn't know whether that was an abbreviation or an acronym. So I decided to look it up.

Apparently it is neither, it is an initialism. (Assuming it is said "R.U.D." rather than "Rud").

Abbreviations are shortened words (Feb.)
Acronyms form new words (SCUBA)
Initialisms involve pronouncing each initial letter individually. (FBI)

To which I'd add mnemonic - a set of letters, often in the form of a word used as a prompt for a set of tasks/questions. Exploring family/household and other circumstances we use FAMED - Family, Accommodation, Money, Employment and Discrimination.

So a TLA is not a Three Letter Acronym? But FUD, Fear Uncertainty and Doubt is?

Correct.

TLA itself is more correctly a TLI though it may well be describing TLAs. FUBAR and SNAFU are FLAs and FUD is a TLA. Difficult to know whether OK is a TLI or a TLA.

FOAD is an FLI. Just sayin'.

RADAR is a palindromic acronym.

Actually thinking about it is is radar still an acronym? It is now written without capitals and has crossed the barrier from acronym to ordinary word.
