The name doesn't ring any bells, I feel I should know who he is for some reason, but I've not got the foggiest clue.

Invented the”wall of sound”. Produced a huge number of hit records in the sixties.

Nope not ringing any bells. Not heard of the wall of sound either.

Mind you I've no idea who most of the RIP threads on here are about.

In reality I think he was mostly famous for being a murderer and that's when most people found out what he had done before.

I only knew because of a girlfriend many years ago who was a Ramones fan. Though not a Spector fan.

Didn't he pull a gun on Joey Ramone at one point?

I don't think he had a lot to do with the Beatles apart from the song Let it be and McCartney was less than happy with his contribution.

A talented nutcase by all accounts.

The wall of sound was achieved at recording/mixing:

I'm not sure I'd heard the 'wos' tag until all the publicity around his murder charge etc but the Phil Spector sound was something mentioned from time to time when his tracks came up as 'oldies' on music shows in the late seventies/early eighties.

If you listen to a few of the tracks he produced you'll get the idea.

Yes some of those seem familiar from films such as Casino.
