I went to see “One Battle after Another by Paul Thomas Anderson at the weekend. The best film I have seen for a long while and surely in the running for an Oscar. Stars Leonard de Caprio as an old hippy and Sean Penn as the wonderfully named Colonel Steven J Lockjaw a racist ambitious commander working in immigration control. Penn’s performance is brilliant. Lockjaw will be remembered,
The plot is completely chaotic, it’s very funny at times and it’s very relevant to Trump’ s America. The music score is up there with the best.
If you like Cinema not to be missed.

Probably not such high art, but the 'flicks in the sticks' village hall film on Friday was 'Penguin Lessons'.
Starring Steve Coogan as an English teacher in Argentina when the generals took over, it's a feel-good film. Good entertainment.
|
Went to see “I Swear”, story about Scottish guy with Tourette’s. Some of you may remember a QED program about him when Tourette’s was really brought to the public’s attention.
Absolutely brilliant.
From splitting your sides laughing to almost being in tears.
Thoroughly recommend it.

I thought it was **** with a ****** and ******* characterisation but it could have been ****.
|
I see I Swear is coming to Netflix in March. Unfortunately only in UK and Ireland and not in America where I think many of them need to see it after the comments this week.
A fantastic film worthy of any awards it gets.

Our local indie cinema does old foggy's deals on a Monday, so we fill our boots. Some marvellous films out there. Especially British ones like Mother's Pride, Hamnet. Mrs RP watched I Swear yesterday, not my cup of tea but she rated it. Mr Burton is another fine one, oh ! And the Choral was another sparkler.

A load of self-congratulatory nonsense.

I agree - one lot of luvvies giving awards to other luvvies, accompanied by rehearsed and insincere acceptance speeches, for films which are disproportionately about "worthy social issues".
I watch films, albeit infrequently, to be entertained not depressed by the assorted woes of humanity. I am sure some will judge me superfical and unsympathetic!

Whilst I don’t take much notice of the Oscars this years winner of best picture is a good film. It is not “disproportionately about social issues”nor about the “assorted woes of humanity”. It is a mainstream , non stop action packed film. A thoroughly good night’s entertainment. Well worth seeing.

Terry, Mother's Pride for you then, happy, fun etc. Nice bit of escapism for 93 minutes.

I've never met a single person who gave a damn about the Oscars.

I would never watch the Oscars, life is too short, but awards ceremonies do have a purpose, in that they do point out a good product or service to consumers.
In the US there is a huge industry behind industry awards and it keeps lots of people employed. We do have similar over here but in no way to the same level. I went to a few finance industry bashes in the past, but didn't enjoy them - perhaps it's an a cultural thing?
|
TBH I don't take much interest but I'd expect the Oscars are now a decadent, money soaked grift like everything else.
I'm feeling somewhat Eeyorish today.

I get it that you all don’t like the Oscars but has anyone else seen the winning film. Interested in their review.

It's 20 years since I last set foot in a cinema. That was in Amman, Jordan to see one of the Ice Age films.
Luxury armchairs with holders for drinks and popcorn.
well behaved cinama goers too.
Neighbours have stopped going with the cost and cost od drinks and popcorn etc. but also with the noise, people talking on mobile phones and gemerally being a pain in the backside.

1988 was my last cinema visit to see Who Framed Roger Rabbit. The still had a smoking area on one side.

Well you could always rent the film . You don’t have to go to the cinema although in my view that’s the best place to see a film. I guess no one here is interested in Cinema any more.
|
Love the cinema. Increasingly going to the independent cinemas though because they are better than the local Odeon, which has seen better days.
Only problem with the indi's are their size. My TV at 77inches, is larger than some of their screens :-D
The availability of a civilized drink partially makes up for that though.

Go to the cinema to see films that need a big screen and surround sound. Last one I think was Top Gun maverick, that film, 1917, Ford vs Ferrarri for example are a waste of time at home on a small screen. Good coffee, good beer and good pizza at my local flicks is a bonus. There are few new film releases that need cinema style presentation, used to be plenty. Jurasic park for example was a great big screen experience.
Everything else I steal to watch at home.

Try the Rex in Berkhamsted. Beautifully restored, big comfortable seats, loads of leg room.

Used to go there regularly as a kid - it was better when it was an old flea-pit!
Actually I didn't go there that much. My parents used to drop me off most Saturday evenings, but rather than watch a film we would go along to The Bull PH and have a few pints, then wander back in time for the end of the film for a lift home again :-)

“Go to the cinema to see films that need a big screen and surround.”
The film in question is very much one of those. Did you see it?
|
|
I see it was filmed in vista vision, and no I havent.

We are reasonably regular cinema goers. We have two well appointed indies within an easy drive and a film club in the next town, and a cracking little restaurant which serves themed meals to the movie they show in their cellar. Really good
|
|
Themed meals……don’t go when they show Silence of the Lambs.
