 Egypt winter sun - legacylad
I always close to my 90/180 Schengen allowance and have never visited Egypt.
Jet2 start ops from LBA in 2027, but any advice or recommendations for Jan/Feb 2026 please ? 7/10 days to warm up my bones, probably from MAN.
 Egypt winter sun - Zero
Currently and personally I would avoid Egypt like the Plague. Was planning to do Petra in Jordon at some stage, thats on the back burner now.

Just stay at home and put your home heating termperature up a bit more.

We went once, years ago, and never again.

Stayed at Concorde El Salam near Sharm airport. The hotel and staff were fine but the beach along that stretch is virtually non-existent so swimming and snorkelling is from floating pontoons. Restaurants and bars average but adequate for a short break.

The big downside and the reason we won't go back is that the place was full of Russians whose behaviour was absolutely appalling. It's probably even worse now that Russians aren't welcome in so many other places.
 Egypt winter sun - Boxsterboy
Yes Russians are a very big reason to avoid Egypt, assuming they are still allowed to travel there? Unbelievably rude and selfish.

>> Yes Russians are a very big reason to avoid Egypt, assuming they are still allowed to travel there? Unbelievably rude and selfish. >>

They are probably just behaving as they do at home. About 30 years back we visited Moscow for a few days while our niece was there as part of her Uni course (doing Russian). She had learnt that the only way to get served at most counters was to be loud and aggressive. That was in the time of perestroika, so I don't imagine things have improved much.

We had two holidays at what was then the Hyatt Regency hotel at Taba Heights. The first was great, everybody there that week seemed to be on a Times or Telegraph reader offer.

The second time the hotel was full of mainly very unpleasant Russians. They descended like locusts on the dining room buffet and having piled all the food possible on to their plates would leave most of it uneaten.

The resort seemed to disappear. I found out subsequently there had been a huge flood in 2014 and all the hotels had closed. Apparently it has very recently been revived.

It's not my sort of holiday really, we went twice for a week with a friends group.

Frankly there was nothing to do for anybody who doesn't like lying around by the pool, apart from some excellent snorkelling right off the beach. The is a proper dive centre nearby for serious divers.

We have a similar 90/180 problem.

Although we have never been I have been looking at Morocco - Agadir or Essouria - as an option for next year .

Pleasant but not hot climate. Most reports are of laid back hospitable with more of a local vibe not overrun by Russians or Brits intent on cheap sun.

Agadir I would avoid, didnt like it there its very soul-less, the souk is nothing special,

Essouria or Casablanca.

Zeddo…good call. I had completely forgotten about Russians. I’ve only ever encountered them on ski holidays…the most arrogant, unpleasant, obnoxious people and I try to avoid at all costs.

i shall check out temps in morocco…its basically one week of winter sun..book, decent food and a few sights to stimulate the old brain box.

Cyprus is non schengen, but iffy winter weather.

What strikes me about these North African countries is that few people that I know go more than once.
However my brother in law went on a motorcycle tour up into the Atlas Mountains and his bike broke down. The organisers arranged for a relief bike and for his bike to be left under the care of the village headman for it to be picked up in the support van on the way back.
The bike was perfectly secure when they returned a few days later. Payment was expected though…..a supply of crayons and paper for the village kids. Quite a travellers tale.
He enjoyed the real world experience but he has never gone back either.
Worth a punt maybe if you can get off the beaten track.

Did a winter trip to Marakesh. The weather was ok and warm enough, the sheer history of an orginal Medina is fascinating, the food in the Jemaa el-Fnaa in the evening was fantastic and pure theatre.

would go again.

I visited Cairo years ago. Did the sights like the Pyramids. I enjoyed it but would warn anyone to be very careful with the food. Don't take anything from a bain-marie even in a top hotel. Grilled kebabs are fine and anything freshly cooked. No salads.
 Egypt winter sun - ORB>>
Avoid Egypt.
But Jordan is safe some nice deals to Aqaba with easyJet.
We have my wife's family flat in Amman.
Just don't go in winter. Rain and snow sometimes.
Petra and Jerash well worth it.
Excellent food hygiene and very safe.

Only tip is unless fixed price taxi to/from the airport make sure the meter is on. Don't bother to try and drive in Amman. Shopping malls good. Souk is okay.
Long distance buses ok but cheap. Restaurants near Culture street good.

I shall be returning to Lanzarote in February. More or less guaranteed sunshine, a unique landscape and easy to get to. If you avoid the three major resorts and stay in the Noth of the island it’s a great destination for a winter break.
 Egypt winter sun - Bobby
Ha!
We had to PDC in Lanza in a couple of weeks. Usually go to Tenerife for our Jan winter week but thought we would have a change this year.

Have previously been to Playa Blanca which we found quite quiet so are trying PDC.

Winter week is about lying by a pool reading a book and out for dinner at night. Maybe walks along the prom but it’s a full on chilling lazy week.
 Egypt winter sun - CGNorwich
We obviously like a very different type of holiday. Puerto del Carmen is the sort of place oI avoid and I hate pools but I rather suspect you wouldn’t like staying in a house in the old capital Teguise and walking the surrounding countryside but have a great holiday.
 Egypt winter sun - smokie
I think there is something of an age gap between you which may account for it. :-)

Yeah different holidays for different times.

Have said before but I love Adeje area of Tenerife. Usually go in January and I love just ambling along the prom anywhere between Los Cris and La Calleta. Think it’s something like 10k or thereabouts. Not too hot. Stop every so often for a beer or coffee.

Love doing city breaks. Did Lisbon and Dubrovnik recently both with lots of sight seeing and walking.

Love doing lots of long walks at home with the dog through the trails and countryside.

But defo not interested in trails and hill walking etc when I’m on holiday.

Going to Lanzarote is like going to the moon. Bit easier and cheaper on Easyjet than Apollo, but the destination is the same. Tho it has to be said it worth going to once to look at the work of César Manrique.

 Egypt winter sun - CGNorwich
Last time I visited the moon there was a dearth of decent restaurants so I prefer Lanzarote. No vinyards on the moon either.

The first full moon of 2026 is tomorrow's "Wolf Moon", so called because wolves tend to howl more in winter months.

I used to be a werewolf but I'm alright nowwwww!

Quadrantid meteor shower too.

February can bring spectacular displays of wildflowers in the North of Lanzarote.

By 'eck, it's good to be back.

>>I love just ambling along the prom anywhere between Los Cris and La Calleta

We used to cycle to La Calleta from Los Cris every Saturday when we lived there for 3 years, then have a Burger King in Las Americas on the way back :

Happy days!
 Egypt winter sun - helicopter
I go to Los Christianos in Tenerife every November for three weeks, same shared apartment owned by a group of family and friends.
Love the place but now travel by disability scooter due to my partner rupturing her Achilles.
We travel the promenade up to La Calleta and stop when we feel like it for a cold beer , coffee or a tapas lunch.
As Perro says..happy days.
Only problem last year was having my wallet nicked, lost €100 , apartment keys and bank card. Pickpockets everywhere in the tourist areas.
 Egypt winter sun - Bobby
I very rarely carry cash or a wallet.
Usually it’s Apple Watch to pay for everything and my phone in my pocket.
Would be more concerned about getting my phone pinched.

I see a lot of video reels about crime in the reef and of course as soon as you click on one you get inundated with them. But have honestly never felt unsafe in any way whilst there. Though I do believe it’s a different place in the middle of summer.
 Egypt winter sun - CGNorwich
I lost my wallet on the island of La Palma a few years back. I dropped it in a restaurant. It was found and handed it in to the police who tracked me down via a receipt for my hire car contained in the wallet. The police had rung the hire ar Co to obtain my telephone number and they had sent me a text message. I hadn'tt actually realised I had lost it!

I too now mostly use my phone for payments but I've put an Apple Air Tag in my wallet just in case.

If you have not been to Australia in summer before be careful of the sun. It isn't like Spain in summer. It is more like North African summer. Wear a broad brimmed hat, use lots of suntan lotion and try to stay in the shade. I have lived in Australia for over 50 years and have seen visitors from the UK who have got burned or made themselves ill by under estimating the heat.
 Egypt winter sun - tyrednemotional
The majority of the trip will be NZ (our third visit), but just for the experience a few days in Sydney on the way out to put a tick against another country.

Venezuela's warming up at the moment....
 Egypt winter sun - CGNorwich
Looking at the snow outside I guess it’s going to be a big day for booking holidays in the sun.
 Egypt winter sun - smokie
I'm off for a 2 week float around the Caribbean in a week. Weather looks OK - 27 day, 23 night, 27/28 sea temp!

Seems Mr Trump might have other plans for me.

All flights to Barbados (like mine) currently in question due to airspace restrictions. Some were turned back mid-flight today.

The cruise lines are rescheduling some stops, but ours seems to be to the safer, slightly more distant from Venezuela, islands.

I do hope I get to go!!

He'll be after Colombia next. Glad I got to Catagena, fantastic city. That was the last cruise before Covid struck them all down.

I'll pack enough pants just in case :-)

Three TUI flights to Barbados turned back today according to the monopoly on travel reporting. (Simon Calder)
 Egypt winter sun - smokie
As far as I can tell the three were yesterday - BY830 (B'ham), BY10 (Gatwick) and BY162 (Manchester). The restriction was lifted this morning.

Whatever, hopefully it'll all be back to normal by next Sunday...

Yer, cheap hotel rooms, free return flights to the good ole USof A
 Egypt winter sun - tyrednemotional
I think the free flight offer is likely to be one-way. ;-)

Our German niece has been over for Christmas and New Year. She went to the Bomber Command memorial in Lincoln yesterday. :O

Ironically she was supposed to fly out this evening to Amsterdam and then on to Southern Germany bit KLM cancelled yesterday. She cant get another flight until Tuesday. There appear to be Business Class seats available but impossible to actually speak to a human to see if they will let her fly in Business on a cheaper ticket.

Plenty of technically superior options. To implement it globally? now thats another matter, certainly a project I wouldn't queue up to manage.

Shes stressing about getting to work on Wednesday.
Schiphol seems to be having issues.
Advised to head south for a flight. So booked a direct from Heathrow to Stuttgart this evening.
Put her on a train down to Kings X so all coming together.
EXCEPT East Coast Mainline now suffering severe disruption south of Retford,
Now trying to get her to Sheffield and then onwards on MML but not going to make booked flight.
Another flight booked for tomorrow. It doesn't take much to throw travel plans into chaos.

She should be used to railway issues, Deutsche Bahn standards has fallen through the floor in the last 5 years

So she was telling me as we were discussing the rail infrastructure whilst waiting for her Hull Train.
