I need to attend this for a close family member in mid July. I've no intention of risking the M5/A30, particularly after friends in Clevedon tell me of recent closures, so I'll be taking the train.
Any recommendations for accommodation in Falmouth for a few days/suggestions.
I've read about Cambourne and think it may be not a good idea to stay there?

Sorry for your loss Tom. We go to Falmouth every couple of years and never had a bad hotel or apartment. Availability might be tight at short notice but there are several small hotels near the town station with lots of eating places in walking distance. It’s a good town for a wander if you have free time.
However it’s an hour from Falmouth to Camborne by train as you need to change at Truro. Staying in Truro, a nice town, with a direct train to Camborne, might be worth considering.
I don’t know Camborne but as it’s not a tourist town it may be limited, which is perhaps why you are looking slightly further afield.

Other rellies live in Falmouth and I thought it would be a good idea to stay nearby to visit them.

I see, good plan. We usually find an apartment in town, preferably with a view of the Fal estuary. There is a street that runs right along the estuary front for about a mile, from the maritime museum/station in the direction of Truro. Lots of apartments there. Very handy for pubs, coffee shops and eateries. Plenty of small hotels at the station end. Never stayed at any but most look OK.
Beyond those are various hotels towards the beaches at the end of town. Again never stayed but they feel a bit out of the centre in terms of pubs etc. That might appeal though.
At the other end of town is the Greenbank Hotel. We’ve stayed there twice and it’s pretty good. Florence Nightingale and Kenneth Graham connections. It’s a ten minute walk back into the town centre and maybe twenty minutes from the station.
The best apartments we have used were those at a block called Porth Gwell. It’s right above the town centre but up a steep flight of steps. Steep hills abound in Falmouth so don’t rely on booking from two dimensional maps if hills are an issue.
Hills aside, if you stay near the centre, it’s all walkable. The town centre gets nicely busy, we never see anything raucous but you might not to be right by a pub.
