SWMBO was pregnant!!! I didn't know what miserable really was until then. She found baths were more comfortable, so I was syphoning the bath water onto the veg patch and a neighbour reported me for using a hose. Enter a couple of water authority workers who insisted on seeing the top end of the hose in the bath.
Didn't have any problems with blackfly or greenfly that year!
I recall it ended with torrential rain and strong winds at August bank holiday - I was on a sailing trip.

I was 16 and spent August BH on a plane spotters trip to Heathrow. It started raining just as we left the old Queen's Building spectator terraces for the coach home.
Didn't seem to stop for all of September. Lost track of days I walked home from 6th form in pixxing rain and got home drenched.

The '76 summer wasn't particularly hot, just it didn't rain for a very long time.

The one thing you don't seem to get now is the melting tar, which was a regular feature during high temperatures. Have they added something to it that prevents that?

I remember the heat that summer (vaguely). I even remember hot tar on the road (vaguely).
But what I remember clearly was the ladybirds, they were everywhere, under any leaf. We collected them in anything that had a lid.
I've seen one this year :(

I know we have had a few warm spells (heatwaves) since then but it makes for interesting reading. The appointment of Dennis Howells as Minister for Drought was rapidly followed by torrential rain.
This was 50 years ago - the weather this summer has been different but perhaps no more extreme. I am not in climate change denial, but demonstrates that extreme weather compared to the norm does happen.
Summer 2027 may yet be as cold and wet as any in the last 50 years - who knows.

I suffered a long diversion a few weeks back when the Diss/ Bury St Edmund’s Road was closed by police as a result of the roads surface melting.

No, tarmac still melts. I was cycling up Leith Hill early July and the black stuff was bubbling away happily in the heat (but then the road was qute steep and facing south, so at an increased angle to the sun).
