I'm after some bird identification again - spamcan61
Evenin' all,

Spent a couple of hours in the drizzle at Keyhaven ( opposite the Needles) this afternoon, saw this one bird hopping about in the rocks on its own. A bit smaller than a Blackbird, bigger than a Turnstone. Just wondered if anybody knew what it was, there seem to be loads of fairly similar waders in SWMBO's bird books. Pushing my little compact to the limit again!

" loads of fairly similar waders"
Yep, Sandpiper, Dunlin, Knot etc- but none have those orangey legs. How about a Redshank?

Thanks Phil, the two tone beak and the legs look like a good match for a Redshank.

Seems too short in the leg to be a Redshank to me, I`d plump for a Sandpiper in winter plumage - colours are a bit duller than when in breeding plumage.

That's what I thought at first - but those orange/red legs?

The white edges to the wing feathers, short neck and tail makes it look like a Dunlin which are very common around our coasts.

The only problem is the orangey/red legs.

I therefore conclude that it's a hungover Redshank or a Dunlin in legwarmers.

Thanks devonite, looking at images on the web it looks like a Redshank with a Sandpiper's legs, as they do look rather short for a Redshank. The body looks maybe a bit more like a Redshank though.

Looking at the list of common birds in the area just about every wader is on there:-
