Burglar alarm and power outage - movilogo
My burglar alarm activates whenever there is a power outage in the area (happened few times in the past).

Is this normal?

Once it goes off, only way to shut it down via entering the code in control panel (else it will shout for 20 minutes) which is a problem if no one is in the house.

Some other houses in the nearby area also seem to trigger alarms during the power outage.

I moved to this house few years back the alarm was built in. So I don't know how it should be maintained.

It did do its job in the past when I had a break in and my neighbor called police before the scums could take anything (I still had to pay £300 insurance excess to replace the patio door and fence which they broke).

Both alarms I've had previously also do this. No idea why. Could be the siren assumes it's being tampered with if it loses a connection to the control unit.

If they trigger during the outage then presumably they have a battery? Or do they only trigger when the power comes back on?

It triggers when power outage happens (not when power is restored).

It might have a battery but I don't think it will be easy to change it (at least I don't see any visible place to replace battery) and if it were that easy then real burglars could deactivate it in seconds by taking out the battery and switching off the mains supply.

Our alarm has a battey back up in case of a power cut. Alarm is checked once a year by the installer about 30 quid. The alarm is linked to a smoke alarm.

Hmm I guess my backup battery is dead then.

Do I have to ring the manufacturer or any local security company can replace the battery?

Sorry M - I thought you said it goes off during the outage?

EDIT: or you mean there are 2 batteries?

Ah, I see. So must be the backup battery is triggering the alarm assuming someone is tampering with power supply.

If they cut the wires they have to find the wires first and the alarm will go off before then.

I would ring the manufacturer or local supplier they should sort it out.

I have programmed ours do it too, it is so let the thieves no turning the electricity off won't shut off the alarm.

Rather annoying if I need to do any work on the downstairs lighting circuit as this is where the control panel gets its feed from. As soon as I isolate that circuit the alarm goes off.

Burglar alarms are very easy to fix via DIY if you can use a screwdriver and have basic electrical knowledge.

Ours has a few programs keep it simple.A professional can get in anywhere if they want to.But a working burglar alarm means hassle.Unless you live in the sticks with plenty of cash.(Dog.) .:)

You probably need a new battery. They generally live in the control panel. There is a set procedure for changing the battery. Or just wear ear defenders and pop out the old battery and shove the new one in :-)

Think I got my last one from the above people.

I bought the battery for mine from Amazon, a third of the price the local supplier quoted. In fairness to him he gave me the engineer's code to allow me to change it. It was one of those very satisfying DIY moments.

The battery is duff, One of them anyway,

There should be at least one, probably in the siren box, and possibly a smaller one in the control panel.

Batteries are secure because both (siren box and control panel) have anti tamper switches.

They usually have 2 batteries, a lead acid one in the control panel, and a ni-cad or Lion in the bell box. So if the control panel battery is duff, then when power goes the bell box thinks the control panel is being tampered with and goes off using it's own battery. If the bell box battery is duff, then nothing happens when all power (from the mains or battery) gets cut.

Mine has a small lead acid battery. Seems to last about 4/5 years. Replacements avaiable at Maplins.

I have bought them a bit cheaper at a specialist burglar alarm supplier.

The last lead acid battery I bought from Maplin (for my rechargeable torch) didn't last very long. I went to buy another, but the price had almost doubled in just over a year.

I shopped round and found the same size of battery at half the price that Maplins wanted at www.toolstation.com and was pleasantly surprised that it was a reputable brand - Yuasa. I ordered another one for a spare and in doing so meant that I got free postage. Worked out at only something like a £1 dearer than what Maplin wanted for just one battery. I actually saved more than that as I didn't have to drive to my local Maplin (approx a 30 mile round trip) to collect it.
