I see LIDL are offering these soon.
Anyone tried them?
I can certainly recommend their venison steaks.

I've eaten Reindeer in a variety of forms but I don't recall trying moose.
|
Woke up next to one twenty-odd years ago after a particularly heavy night. Left it a note suggesting it let itself out and giving it directions to the bus stop. Never heard from it again. Well, I think it was a moose anyway.

A butcher near me sells buffalo steaks.
|
|
We know a song about that...but I'm not going to be the one who posts the link.

You must have been wearing beer goggles the night before! :-)

Kangaroo and other alternative meats were in Sainsbury's etc during the BSE scare. Unfortunately they didn't sell well enough to last once beef was 'safe' again.

When I was in Rothbury earlier this year I cam across a great butchers who had amongst other things crocodile, kangaroo, ostrich, wildebeest zebra.crocodile, kangaroo, and ostrich,
|
|
I have made quite a lot though.
|
You wouldn't think Rothbury was big enough to support such an eclectic choice would you?
"Ah now pet, let's have wildebeest and chips fur us tea tonight shall we? Ahm reet fed up with zebra"
:-)

Here's a recipe for stuffed crocodile steaks from their website.

They will eat any road-kill up there, big or small. Surprised Raoul Moat didn't end up as chops.,

I think poor old CG is getting confused...it must have been a zoo he was visiting !
It's an age thing :-(

Yes, I eat moose regularly. I'm part of a hunting team, and this year our 'allocation' was 5 adults and 5 calfs. All 5 adults and just 2 calfs were shot just under 2 weeks ago, and the meat divided out today - 22kg to each team member.
Steaks from the calfs are first class, comparable to the best fillet steak. From the adults it can be a little tough though. Generally, the adult meat is best for casseroles and mincing.
I don't know of any commercial moose farms, so not sure where they get their meat from. It would be interesting to find out. I know where mine comes from, so can guarantee that it's 100% wild, killed humanely, prepared within a couple of hours, and hung at the right temperature for the right length of time. Ha, only because I was actually there during all the stages.

I ate a whole Hoggan yesterday lunchtime and it was blimming ansome!

If you go down the Coquet valley CGN to Amble you can get blue whale and great white. All indigenous to Northumberland !!! :-)
The dolphin went years ago.
|
Just discovered you don't need to go all the way to Northumberland for a decent wildebeest steak. You can buy it on line from this excellent site. Python looks tasty or should I try the Impala?

>Python looks tasty or should I try the Impala?
Python is exactly like crocodile and alligator - a cross between chewy chicken and chewy pork. Edible but not enjoyable.
Kudu filet is the best steak I've ever tasted and Kudu biltong will be my luxury item when I'm on Desert Island Discs.
|
>> venison steaks...
Surprised no one has asked if it's dear meat.
|
|
Had some Moose kebabs in British Columbia years ago, quite tasety.
|
SWMBO's got them out of the freezer for tonight. Hopefully they'll go down well with a bottle of red plonk.
Packaging says they're 'Estonian moose leg steaks'. Let's hope 'Estonian moose' isn't a misnomer like Bombay duck.
|
|
"estonian moose" = season mine too.
|
Lidl over here always sells stuff like ostrich, kangaroo, etc, before Christmas. Their venison roasts are pretty good too.
I once had rattlesnake in Wilton - with bubble and squeak!
|

a week marinating in the fridge with cranberries, red wine, and slivers of garlic, then larded with pork fat... meat to die for.
|
Impala steaks are wonderful.
If an enterprising S African businessman bred them and exported the steaks, they would make a fortune..
Best meat I have ever eaten.. and very easy cooking . Soft succulent and very tasty Smell to die for.
|
They were quite interesting. A bit tougher than venison and a similar, but not as strong taste.
Why do I feel the urge to run out in front of an 'A' class?
|
Any urges to headbutt younger males?
Editm- When do mooses ( mice? ) rut?

Treat yourself www.southafricanshop.co.uk/
Harrods food hall also had Kudu and Impala steaks and good biltong last time I was there.

I must get down there!
Oh, wait...

I think you might be able to get 'em cheaper than 80 Rand for a single 150g Kudu steak in CT Ian.
|
|
I've seen kudu skin shoes before now. Long time ago mind. Also ocelot skin ladies boots disturbingly enough still with the fur on. Cordovan ( horse hide ) too. Shark leather wallets and bracelets made of the skin from chicken's feet.
|
Those Moose steaks are a cool £28 per kilo... I'd guess that it's wild Moose - to go with the other game they have. Their pheasants are a cool £7 each... OK they're stuffed but if you reckon the game dealer is getting 20p per bird in feather, probably £1 dressed, that's pretty pricey!
I don't buy game from Lidl. Even at Borough Market you can get 3 pheasants for £10.
|
Humph:
How do you titilate an ocelot?
Ocsillate its titalot...
|
Actually on reflection, it is a bit tempting to get moose for Christmas lunch...Just to have the opportunity to tell my MIL that I'd got the very thing for her....
:-)
