Bare Bones PC CPU advice - Jacko
I have bought the following bare bones PC

Asus Vintage V3-M2NC61P Barebone Mini Tower Black/Silver Socket AM2+ nVIDIA MCP61P 300W PSU
In the mistaken belief I could fit a Pentium 4 to it.

I now realise I need an AM2 CPU

Could somebody recommend an appropriate chip and advise what else I need to order. I guess I need a heatsink and a fan.

Thanks for any help

Jacko

Those are all 'OEM' versions, so yes, you will also need a heatsink and fan eg.

when you buy the CPU try to get a RETAIL boxed CPU, it comes with a Fan and heatsink. These are guaranteed to fit most Mboards with minimum hastle.

You also often get three years warranty with the retail packages and stickers etc but I've only ever seen one blown processor in my life and that was because the heatsink was loose.

Thans Zero, Focus and Rattle.

Which CPU should I choose from the supported list, given the spec. Is anyone able to decipher the BIOS message that accompanies the list.

you choose your CPU. by what socket it fits (the AM2 in this case) and how much you can afford to pay, the more you pay the faster you get.

What do you mean BIOS messages? If you mean the list of BIOS's you basically refresh the bios with the latest one availble.

Did your bare bones come with memory?

Hi Zero

It did n't come with any memory. I was trying to work out a critical factor or a suitable combination of CPU and memory.

Thanks for you advice

Depends to some extent on what you plan to use the PC for - which OS (Windows XP, Vista, 7, or linux), games or just browsing and email? If games then the graphics card is at least as important as the CPU.

You can get some idea of the relative performance of the CPUs from sites such as

Nobody seems to have pointed out so far that you bought an AMD CPU based setup rather than for Intel processors.

I think the fact we said he needs a cpu for an amd socket would have cleared that up?

Yes, but the comment was intended to apply to the time he bought it rather than afterwards.

...apart from the OP - sorry, don't get it.
