is it illegal to convert to dvd for my own consumption?
if not can anybody offer a freeware programme as its stumped me.

Yep its ilegal because its copyrighted material. Iplayer comes with DRM management. You can technically convert the files but I am not sure if were are allowed to say how on a public forum.

It's as legal as recording from the broadcast to tape or DVD I would think. Sort of illegal then.

Google will tell you how to do this. It is particularly easy on an Apple Mac with the right application - the one I know of displays the iPlayer site as normal but downloads and removes DRM instead of playing the videos.
