Is it just me or has the quantity of this stuff gone off scale?
Outlook is very good at identifying this stuff and putting it in the 'Junk' folder. There were a dozen in there at 08:30 this morning and several more since.
Most are gambling related - offers of 'free spins'. The rest are for weight loss and other pharmaceutical products plus phishing stuff like telling me a n other direct debit - often the TV licence - has failed.
I've never been in a Casino or bookies in my life. Occasional seaside one armed bandits or Scarborough's promenade bingo halls is as far as I'd go.

It comes in waves, someone sold your email address to spammers. Probably that porn site.
At least your spam filter binned it.

Shouldn't this be in computer related? I'll forgive them this time, they're probably getting on a bit.
I was swamped with junk mail last month, mostly foreign related stuff, America, France and Germany. I've still got 1300 junk emails in my hotmail account, but it doesn't bother me as I know they'll be deleted every 30 days.
I believe it was because I was incautious with my email account and it's password many years ago and it's being passed around scammers for, probably, ever reducing sums.

I hardly ever get anything I would call true 'junk'. At one time I used to regularly see MacAfee and the like. What happens now is occasional sending of email from regular senders to the Junk box for a few days, then they revert to normal Inbox. I've done nothing to cause that.

Just checked my ‘junk’ folder and the latest mail in there is from September 1st, from Snows BMW, which probably isn’t actual spam as emails from named people there do still get through. Sadly that means I’ve missed the ‘priority access event’ on 3rd to 6th September and missed out on the exclusive offers available only at the event ;)

Must admit I don't get a lot which I can't pin a reason on. I think it's probably because I have my own domain.
It's a variant of something I experienced when I worked at the Coal Board HQ (200+ people I think) back in the 70s. (Mostly) "Financial services" people would call the switchboard and ask for John Smith, Fred Smith, Rob Smith and any other variant of common first and surnames. They would occasionally get a hit, presumably sufficiently frequently to make it worthwhile.
Nowadays the spambots just hook up millions of combinations of name against the thousands of common ISP names - like john.smith1@gmail.com through to john.smith9999@gmail.com in fractions of milliseconds - and get many many more hits with a tiny fraction of the effort.
I never used to mail them back, or unsubscribe, as I felt it gave away you were a real person.
I was once in a bid a bid for an ISP type company in east London and the volume of spam messages they filtered out daily was literally tens of millions of time more than those which got through the heavily layered security in which the user accounts lived.
And while it's computer related, it's more of a general discussion point rather than a tech issue which is why I've not moved it.

A couple of years ago I checked my email one morning and had over 3000 emails! Quite a shock as you can imagine. Obviously my address had been spammed somehow. By sending them to junk and blocking they tailed down to dozens a day within a few weeks.
Even now I get the odd one slipping through. They seem quite random - US retailers and clubs, Dutch, Chinese etc. Just a few a week now, but my junk folder is earning its keep.

Oops! I just have before reading this far down.

Should've moved it to the junk folder....

It was a conscious decision to put it in general discussion for the reason Smokie surmises but given the number of us here and the fact there are only a handful of sub forums it doesn't matter.
The dozen overnight seems to have been a one off; back to as it was since.
My email is in the formant forename.surname@outlook.com so the possibility of random name/surname combinations is probably it although it doesn't explain why the junk phenomenon is only recent.
Current address was set up as a reserve c2009 and moved to the front when my then ISP, successor to Demon started charging for previously free domain.
