Giving 10 year old daughter a laptop for Crimbo.
Comes with windows 7 (64 Bit). Just going to install some stuff on it today for her.

A user of AVG myself (on XP), It appears from the other thread that MSE will be better? Does it need any other Anti Virus stuff?

I’ve had a read through the Anti Porn thread, but there doesn’t seem to be any actual recommendations for parental filter software, anybody using something that they are even mildly happy with?

Any recommendations for other stuff?

I assume I will be legit in buying Student License stuff for this machine?
Has anyone used ‘Software4students’ 38 quid for office pro seems too good to be true? Realistically, she will only use Word & PowerPoint, but I don’t think I could buy them cheaper separately (I know about Open Office etc, but Microsoft stuff is used in school)

Anyway, about to fire it up just now.

TIA.

Yes its better, no it needs nothing else. Thats all I run.

Net Nanny gets the best reviews.

Yes, she is a student so the license is legit. My wife was at university recently, so we used her status to get cheap win 7 upgrade. Its sound to good to be true, but it is.

Ditto here for Office - just get a CD, no packaging IIRC.

Avast! is good if, for some reason, you don't fancy MSE.

And it has a nice little orange ball to look at that spins around in the system tray.

You seem well covered for office-type software, but Jarte is a good, lightweight word processor which opens quickly on my netbook.

Similarly, Foxit is a speedy PDF reader.

Both are free to download.

Yes, they like to brainwash them young, don't they! Same at my kids' schools.

software4students do come up fairly regularly over on hot uk deals, might be worth skimming some of these threads:-

Just get very familier with MBR rookits and how to remove them. Young people and windows are a just a receipe for viruses.

Edit actually make sure she has no access to admin mode :). Create an admin account with a password for yourself and then create a limited user account for your daughter. At least that should make it a lot harder for rootkits to get in.

Like the cataract surgeon who tells you that every patient he operates on has a cataract, so he says to everyone - beware of cataracts, and learn how to remove them.

Agreed.

Not that I know what a rootkit is, but I was thinking they were in danger of becoming the cambelt of the computer related forum.

Heck! glad I didn't leave that till Saturday morning then!

Picked IE8 as the browser (as I suspect that will be used in school) - Ho Hum - Flash Player 10.1 not available for my 64 bit browser? A bit of fettling required.

I have Windows 7 64 bit with the latest version of Flash 10.1 installed. Have you tried downloading it again?
 Notebook for Daughter - Zero
Installed 10.1 on one of my clients 64 bit ok.

www.filehippo.com/download_flashplayer_ie/tech/
Flash Player 10.1.102.64 (IE)
Requirements: Windows 2000 / XP / 2003 / Vista / Windows7 / XP64 / Vista64 / Windows7 64

Why not download it directly from Adobe?

...Picked IE8 as the browser...

Always worth having a spare browser knocking about, I like Firefox.

Lots of people now seem to like Chrome, although it wasn't well thought of when it was introduced.

Thanks for all the input so far guys.

I use chrome on the home computer, I'll give her the option to change, but would just like it to be 'natural' to her out the box.

The flash player thing - there are 2 versions of IE in the start menu 1. vanilla IE & 2. IE (64 bit)

If I use the standard IE, flash stuff runs without any more input. If I use 64 bit, it tells me I need to install Flash takes me to adobe and then informs me its not availiable but I can download a preview release.

Should I just pin the standard version to the taskbar? What does the 64bit version offer?

Because Adobe make it difficult to find a full download and do not give all that information summarised so neatly by Filehippo on one page (and list previous releases, Beta versions, etc.)

Here is a challenge for you: Try finding on Adobe all that information given on Filehippo, and then you post the links here, and include a page that states that Flash Player 10.1.102.64 (IE) works with 32 bit and 64 bit Windows 7.

Just re-read the OP.

The computer is a Christmas present for a 10-year-old girl.

Whatever happened to My Little Pony?

Times move on. She could probably set it up better than me!

...Times move on. She could probably set it up better than me!...

Knowledge of computers is essential these days and the younger she starts the better she will pick it up.

Has she asked for a computer or shown any interest in yours?

I wonder what I would have made of a computer at that age.
 Notebook for Daughter - ToMoCo
She asked for one last year but didn't get, so it's a surprise this year (funded with help from the bank of Grandpa).

We have seperate users on the home desktop (me, wife, daughter and son(7)) and it's often a battle for time on that.
 Notebook for Daughter - Iffy
...and son(7))...

So daughter's a computing late developer?

I don't know much about children, although I imagine I've made that clear already.

To know if you have the latest version, then this page on Adobe's site is useful:

www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/

Also has a link to the downloads page:

get.adobe.com/flashplayer/otherversions/

Edit: And Windows 64 bit does not have a 64-bit copy of Flash Player yet. At least it didn't. I'd just use the 32-bit IE browser (or other browser).
