Since about 8am various Typhoons and other pointless inventions have been messing around over the north of England. Go home or sod off over the North Sea, or Aylesbury or something. >> What is RAC in this context? TCAS resolution advisory complement. It's part of the coordination between two conflicting aircraft. Once a solution is computed the TCAS systems will send advice to the other aircraft to minimise the risk of collision. The Resolution Advisory is something like "I WILL CLIMB", "I WILL DESCEND". "I WILL LEVEL OFF", and the complement is a component that says "DON'T PASS ABOVE ME" or "DON'T PASS BELOW ME". Not surprising the Biggles would be unable to comply with a TCAS instruction. A old friend of mine, now retired, began flying in the RAF and was on fast jets as a young man. Later in life, he went on to become a commercial airline pilot. He maintained that (of course in theory), an empty passenger aircraft could also be flown with a considerable degree of abandon if the pilot knew how to and was sure of remaining undetected by anyone who might object. We were never sure if he was winding us up, and I’m sure you can neither confirm nor deny knowing anything like that FF? ;-) Reply to this message | Report message

Wasn't a 707, or perhaps the "dash 80" prototype, barrel rolled by Boeings Chief Test Pilot in the mid fifties? There's video on the net of a BA VC-10 so low it's practically clipping the grass at White Waltham in the seventies. I very much doubt it was rolled beyond 90 degrees on its last years in the air, Shoreham Air crash ensured the CAA was watching over them like a hawk. Sure plenty of wingovers that look spectacular, (I Filmed a few of them ) but not 90 degrees. Reply to this message | Report message

It's amazing what a display aircraft can appear to do. One of most impressive displays I've ever seen was a militarised version of the old Fokker F27 - the Dart engined original not the rehash with modern turboprops - at the Air Tattoo c1985. Reply to this message | Report message
