This is a bit of a historical milestone. SR West Country Class 34028 Eddystone.

Withdrawn in 1965, 22 years rusting away in Dai Woodhams scrap yard in Barry, 15 years being rebuilt, 12 years running on the swanage railway, another rebuild, this time to mainline standards, today ran its first mainline tour in 60 years.

Gosh, already sold rights to this footage to a documentary maker.

How much drag is there from that diesel hanging on the back? Are they manned?

Has that scrap yard gone now?

Do they all have a diesel at the rear now?

The coaches there look like later BR mk2 jobbies. Does the diesel provide ETH current for the aircon?

>> Do they all have a diesel at the rear now?

Depends. Mostly this year yes, as its been a high fire risk, so the steam loco up front is in show pony mode, just enough regulator open to lubricate the cylinders and puff some steam up the chimney.

Clan line will be doing a run later this week Victoria/dover/Victoria and probably wont be tailed with a diesel becuase a: its a circular route, so no shunting, b: fire risk is much lower, c: Clan Line is a big class 8 loco so has enough grunt to haul those heavy ex brighton belle "orient express" coaches and the heavy generator coach around (tho if its wet they may loose couple a diesel on the back to assist up the big hill out of victoria, where it drops off just before grosvenor bridge and stays behind.

WCR is operating this tour, they are in trouble with the ORR around deadlockiing the Mk1 slam doors, so they are scraping around to make up compliant consists of mixed types. The 47 can provide ETH for the aircon in those coaches that have it (tho knowing WCR it wont be working so no point)

Tho personally, I have to say a Steam loco with a consist of Mk2's looks fundamentally wrong.

Oi!

The 47 on the back weighs about 115 tons, sounds like its on notch 1, so just driving its own weight. Yes its manned, pmr radio to steam loco foot plate. Driver in 47 is qualified to fire/drive steam loco (tho may not have required route knowledge) Driver and Fireman of steam loco are qualified to drive 47.

Dai Woodhgams at Barry had about 250 scrap locos through it, about 220 were saved and hauled out again (some as donors to rebuild others)

reason so many locos were saved was because it was easier to cut up and scrap coal wagons, so they rearely got round to the locos.

Its now a housing estate and an ASDA superstore,

Had a couple of trips to wander round Woodhams in my trainspotting youth.

Gosh, it must be nearly 60 years ago!

Quick Note to Duncan

On Saturday 15th about 10:25, 35028 SR Merchant Navy Class "Clan Line" will be hauling up the main line through Esher on Saturday. Alas not routed at 75mph on the fast main, so will be frustrated by what ever "stopper" is on the local lines in front of it.

Thanks Zero.

I will try to have a butchers.
Steam Train Videos - Volume 2 - Duncan
Whoops! mis-remembered that as 12.30, so missed it. Damn and blast.

Thanks for the heads up a few days ago.

My daughter and youngest grandson ( 4 ) watched from an empty platform .
Probably possibly Raynes Park. Her phone video of it was quite good. It was not hanging about.

>>It was not hanging about.

Once they switch it to a fast main line the crew have a route obligation to give it some beans.

Hit 74 MPH through Surbiton and beyond according to an onboard gricer with stopwatch.

And this was the location and shot I had in the back of my mind when I bought the drone.

Early 6:00am start from me needed, and a lucky break in the weather meant all this came together. The Ouse Vally Viaduct (sometimes known as the Balcombe Viaduct) is an iconic spot
for gricers (and general drone fliers who like to fly through the arches)

Superb!! Thanks zero, lovely camera work, watched Tornado and scotsman come through west Byfleet Station last year ( lovely little Station just down the road from me).
Steam Train Videos - Volume 2 - Zero
West Byfleet is my local station, gets more than its fair share of Steam. Bet you didn't see this at West Byfleet!!!!

Excellent!

What does the switching on/off of lights and the re-arranging of white discs mean?

>> What does the switching on/off of lights and the re-arranging of white discs mean?

They are called "route disks", or headcodes, used back in the day for identification of the train/route for signal boxes mainly. Only used on steam trains now for historical authenticity.

I think all steam locos except new ones like Tornado are limited to 75, presumably to reduce the risk of failure, but also to limit hammerblow on the track.

I remember doing the Settle-Carlisle-Warrington run several years ago, back down the WCML behind the GW Castle, showing 81 on someone's GPS through Wigan ....

They are, for that very reason - continuously welded steel rail does not like hammer blow. Trains with smaller driving wheels (like B1's, Black 5's,) are limited to 60mph.
As for failure, Tornado failed on its high speed passenger run, blocking the ECML fast line at Biggleswade.

Timed Clan Line at 83 through through Farnborough, Filmed Bittern on its legal high speed test at 93
