Probably because they need to blend the colour in so it looks right. If they didn't do all of this you'd probably be complaining that they hadn't done it right, got paint on the door strip/door mirror, etc.

Anyway that's irrelevant because it will likely be written off. Even dropping the cost of fixing it to say £3000 I would imagine it is too costly. You can probably get a replacement from £3500.
