There is an offence of driving a car without an MOT, but that's relatively minor - typically a fine and no points on your licence.
The much bigger offence is driving a car that's unroadworthy - even if the MOT is prebooked.
The law doesn't completely define what unroadworthy means - but it's usually taken to mean tyres, brakes, steering, dangerous bodywork.
