Phone goes everywhere and does everything for me. Even when the battery’s flat it can still be used to pay for stuff, that has never happened yet !

Bus pass won’t work from a phone though.

I still generally wear a watch, mostly to keep its little electronic heart working (18 yr old Seiko kinetic) Wearing my Omega as we went out for lunch earlier

I have a £20 note in the house as I need a haircut sometime soon

About the same here Smokie but would add identifying wildlife including birdsong, listening to podcasts, counting how many steps I’ve walked, navigation on foot and in car, parking, adjusting hearing aids, translation.

How did we live without these things?

Dunno why it's called a phone. I've been persuaded to use my son's cast-off OppoA16s. I'm on a pay-as-you-go tariff so I rarely make calls....use my wife's on the rare occasion I do. Main use is for if emergency when out on bicycle, the umpteen pass codes needed these days and the occasional 'whats-app' communication.

Re credit card, I've no problem with loads of little purchases on the monthly statement as it's all on line, automatically paid off each month. But agree don't want them cluttering up bank statement so bank card rarely used. As for cash, I never do business with 'cash only' outfits. To discourage criminal activity, I think the £10 note is the largest denomination anyone needs these days, especially if poor and 'unbanked'. All £20 and £50 notes should be withdrawn from circulation forthwith.

I think there's some coins on my desk at home which was parking money from the car but all our local places are now card only. Never use cash at home or abroad but I do put a £20 note (€20 abroad) in the back of my phone case for dino companies or emergencies - some bars here are cash only but it is so cheap that's buy me 4 or 5 pints!! SWMBO carries some cash usually but rarely uses it.

Not bothered about keeping my phone "empty", the absolute last thing it is used for is phone calls!! Banking, navigation, calendar, camera, weather forecast, news, listening to music, watching TV & films, games, shopping, money, utility accounts, translating, flight and marine traffic info (and sometimes the space station and other space junk), bus timetables and pass, managing my car and EV changing, medical (NHS and doc apps), WhatsApp for my other voluntary work and keeping in touch with the kids... keeping an eye on my investments and pensions...managing my home assistant, booking flights hotels and parking,

That's the flavour of the most used apps on my phone but there are many others.

Nor do I wear a watch :-)

And the same with me. Having to remember every little thing you've spent a couple of quid on and having a pocket full of receipts is something I find a real pain. Cards are useful, especially for big purchases but cash is still king.

"Oldie" here!
1) Cash in wallet and used for under say £30.00
I would hate to have dozens of trivial transactions listed on a Credit Card Bill/ Bank Statement.

2) 2 x different Bank Cards and 1 x Credit Card from another bank. Just in case 1 bank has issues.

3) Seldom less than £150 in my wallet and when pushed can pay for supermarket/full tank etc etc

I do not have any Banking Apps/Credit Card Apps on my phone. My 3 sons and their families think/know I am a dinosaur.

Ditto here.
2 bank accounts, 1 for rental income for making tax digital.
Always a chunk of cash available. some people prefer it. If I tip in a restaurant it's always in cash and I generally tell my serving staff it's for them personally. The lovely receptionist in a nice hotel in Nimes was very surprised with her tip which i made plain was for her only.
Cash has saved my bacon a good few times

I resonate with this. I pay by cash when necessary, contactless otherwise and occasional BACS transfers. Don't clutter my phone with lots of apps, keep those to a minimum. Hardly ever pay to park anywhere so that's not a problem. A more likely scenario is phone going flat or (worse) being lost altogether. That is a REAL problem - all eggs in one basket, to use old phrase.

In the last month I have come across parking machine where the Card part not working but accepted coins. Jet wash was cash only. Separate occasion petrol station was cash only. Nothing major granted as there were other car parks, jet wash can be put off and other nearish petrol stations.

Not the worst in my age group however. I do internet banking. I know of a few who do not do internet banking they write cheques for many things and/or go to a Bank and fill in Pay-in slips to send grandkids their birthday money etc etc

I just use my multi-meter .

Never seen the point of over complicating things.

Young chap in front of me at the checkout this week. Searched for phone, tried to unlock it then looked for his bank app-, having to put his pin in. Then it didn't work, Took 7/8 minutes.

I had my debit card ready in my coat pocket. Flashed it over the reader and was done...simples.

>> place the metal end on for instance a torch button on the screen, another
>> finger on the other end, if the torch comes on it’s a working fuse !

Was told about this hack too, but using either the calculator app, or to enter your PIN.

Very occasionally I need to test a plug fuse. Short of digging out a multi tester often wondered if the was an easier way to test one. Thanks to a British Gas engineer who visited yesterday I discovered a “hack”. All you need is a smartphone, place the metal end on for instance a torch button on the screen, another finger on the other end, if the torch comes on it’s a working fuse !
