Still owned by them, not so sure whether the training thing carried on. The White Eagle is another one of their places. Looking back, there are some superb eateries on Ynys Môn....quite special places.

Many years ago I worked in a mining camp in north Australia. A big set up with hundreds of men there living in transportable huts. When I arrived I was astounded at how good the canteen food was and how you could have as much as you wanted as often as you liked all for free (part of your wages). After about three months of this I got bored with the menus, and took it for granted. Not fair really considering that for weeks before I had been camping in the bush living on tinned dog and beans cooked over a campfire!

>> The BT training centre at Stone always had good grub.

Having spent months of my life there, I'm afraid I can't agree with that. The standard of training was excellent.

Coincidentally I met Gary in my last job at the Hospice in Glasgow when we were looking to go into partnerships with the College.
Was a great idea, setting up a charity shop/ cafe where students would be able to get great hands on experience.
Hospice made me redundant half way through the discussions so not sure what the outcome was!

I still recall the meals at the Police College in Warrington in 1965. They were superb, top quality food, imaginative and varied.

The prisoners from Appleton Thorne, who were bussed in to look after the grounds, ate the same food for lunches. Must have been heaven after bread and water !

" Thw brackish water that we drink crawls with a loathsome slime. The bread we eat has little wheat, but mostly chalk and lime. "

I’d second that; there’s one in Chichester, though not quite in the city centre, that I have been to a few times and the food and service has always been good. There’s a marked difference in the nervousness of the students if you go in October vs going in May - nice to see them grow in confidence as the terms pass!!

I was invited to lunch as a thank you for a small favour that I had done for a charity.

The local further education college in the town centre has a "training restaurant" that is open to the public. It's properly set out as a restaurant with silver service waiting.

The menu was limited to three starters, three mains and three deserts. Two courses for £15, three courses for £18. Portions weren't the largest, but apparently they are sized to what is healthy. The trainee chefs are visible and the waiting staff were attentive - all teenagers.

There was an extensive wine list.

I'll be going again and if your local college does similar fare then it may well be worth a visit.
