>I've been trying to like it, but I am only getting more sceptical.

Me too. I'm glad, for jaGuar's sake, that someone likes it. They just need tens of thousands more in the US to like it enough to part with ~$200k. I think that they're going to struggle though because I can't see this appealing to their typical US buyers. It also won't have helped when they effectively said they didn't care about them and wanted to appeal to a different demographic so they burned their bridges.
What that demographic is or whether it actually exists outside a marketing droids powerpoint is open to question.

>I don't think it is 'beautiful',..

I think it's ugly. It's hardly Grace, Space, Pace is it? But, like you I'm not on their target list.

I drove XJs for more than 20yrs and I'm in the market now for an XKR to replace the BMW.

I think this had potential in 2003. Without the suicide doors and with a decent petrol lineup of course.

I believe Rolls Royce actually licensed the nitrogen-filled spheres for use in the Silver Shadow.

I've been trying to like it, but I am only getting more sceptical. It has 1000hp, arresting looks, and apparently it is comfortable and relaxing to drive.

The power is just bragging rights, obviously. I think they limit it to 750hp anyway. I don't think it is 'beautiful', that's a matter of opinion of course but once the novelty of the looks has worn off it's only slightly more pleasing to look at than a Cybertruck to me.

However what I can't get over is how compromised it is. The best solution is always a compromise of course but what has been compromised here, presumably to production-engineer the concept without changing it too much, seem to be the wrong things.

Do mature buyers really want to be diving into a menu on a touch screen to get more heat on their feet, or adjust the sensitivity of the wipers?

It's gimmicky design. The 'RSJ' down the middle of the interior must surely be something you have to learn to live with rather than want? The wheels have been made as large as possible with rubber band tyres (no spare wheel of course and I guess no option for one).

I understand that they were never able to make money competing in the upper-mid segment, that their existing market was not giving them a profit opportunity. To ditch them instantly rather than phasing a repositioning was brave, and possibly forced on them by the turmoil in the car markets that is putting even the previously dominant, volume, manufacturers in jeopardy.

Going this far with, presumably, no plan B looks incredibly high risk. And 2 years after they announced it, you still can't buy one. In another year's time when it comes to market I fear the market will have moved on again. Jaecoo might even have a Temu version out by then.

They used to say nobody ever got fired for buying IBM. Not a perfect analogy, but after a period of dithering between this and a new Porsche or Bentley, most will take the more conservative option. That's a given. Will there be enough left for Jaguar?

I am not of course in the target market which they have no doubt researched to death.

I like the look of this - the type of car Cruella de Ville (101 Dalmatians) would have driven, and I like the bold futuristic direction of the design.

BUT, a pall of mine went to a Jag presentation and has seen and prodded it. He's my height - 6'0" and slim with it. He found the front seat /cockpit very cramped. And the back seat (as has been alluded to in on-line videos) is ridiculously small. He couldn't get in and be comfortable when sat behind himself. For a car this big that is sold as a grand tourer, I think that is unforgiveable.

Is the industry in such turmoil that they are trying to cover every base? Stellantis might not die but it looks as if it could end up a much smaller company. Even Toyota and VAG face a very uncertain future.

Even affordable 2 seater volumes have been in decline for years.

Looks? I'm strongly biased, I much prefer my BRZ for a coupe even if, or because, it is 'traditional'.

It's an abomination for a vehicle they hope will sell in (smallish) volume.

>That perhaps is when the mixed-case logotype will look a bit childish.

The whole car looks as if it was designed as a primary school excercise to keep the boys on the back row quiet for half an hour.

>..when they decided to "copy nothing"? I can see that it's trying to be different, maybe just a bit too hard.

The only thing they failed to replace was a round thing at each corner. Everything else was change for change's sake with not a single thought of whether what they came up with was an improvement on what they already had.

Being different can be good. Difference for the sake of it is rarely successful or attractive.

They will have had no end of focus groups mainly from the potential target customers (have money, buy expensive cars).

They say that when people scored the design out of 10, they had a high proportion of 9s and 10s. They also had a high proportion of 1s and 2s. From this they conclude that is is very polarising.

They didn't mention whether they asked them if they liked Marmite or not.

The word "gimmick" isn't used so often these days but it comes to my mind...yes it's dramatic, somewhat unusual, and there's a lot to goggle at. But when the surprise has worn off, what are you stuck with? That perhaps is when the mixed-case logotype will look a bit childish.

The E-type remains beautiful in its 7th decade (except perhaps the 2+2). I don't think that will be the case with the Type 01.

Is anyone else reminded of the 1930s Bentley Speed Six Blue Train?

Perhaps Jaguar was right to ditch the old strategy, it never really paid, but very few businesses wanting to reposition like this would start by burning everything down.

I wonder if they were thinking of Bang & Olufsen or Rado, for example, when they decided to "copy nothing"? I can see that it's trying to be different, maybe just a bit too hard.

Nope - I prefer curvy cars. What a tragic departure from their 'most beautiful car ever made' -(Enzo Ferrari). This is a brutish slab-sided (and -ended) reversion to the short-lived straight line angular styling (both inside and out) of the late 1970s.

It’s not for me, but I don’t suppose it’s aimed at me either! Perhaps in the Middle East and China where the money is, it’ll fly out of the showroom. I just don’t see why, if you wanted to make a statement, you wouldn’t just buy a Rolls Royce. At that price level I can’t see the saving of a ‘cheaper’ Jaguar being part of the decision process.

After the gestation period of an elephant and nearly 2 years after announcing that it would cede its existing market segment to the competition, Jaguar has finally shown a 'production' version of its Lady-Penelope-style sports car.

It's surprisingly faithful to the concept, except in the glaring addition of 2 doors.

I still have my fingers crossed for Jaguar but it still looks a lunatic strategy to me.

Harry Metcalfe has driven it. He's too diplomatic and has too much of a relationship with Jaguar to rubbish it but it's hardly a rave review.
