Blokes classic car trashed by a Skoda - VxFan
A classic car enthusiast had a lucky escape after a woman driver ended up on top of his vintage 1920s motor following a horror crash.

Fire crews used specialist cutting equipment to rescue the pair, both in their 60s, before they were treated by paramedics at the scene on New Year’s Day.

How the heck did that happen I wonder.

There was a photo in the comic this morning. It too failed to identify the 'vintage motor' as a very mint-looking Vauxhall 30/98, in its day thought a better car than the contemporary 3 litre Bentley being lighter, quicker and better handling. Perhaps a bit less crash resistant, but you can't have everything.

Very handsome too to my eye, far better looking than any Bentley. Rare as hen's teeth, worth a fortune.

Keep us posted. Takes some fathoming.

I'd suggest the Skoda took a sizeable thump on its nearside before ending up where it did.

Saw this retweeted by the local police force yesterday.
Attacked by a Yeti!

I think it's abominable.

That would be my guess.

The classic might have hit the Yeti which tipped in the air and came back down on the classic.
There is quite a bit of damage around the front offside wheel and the whole front suspension appears to have been pushed left.
How they came to collide we might find out .

The female driver of the Skoda Yeti also required hospital treatment after complaining of leg, back and neck pain after the collision,

“Both the driver and passenger were fortunate to escape serious injury. The driver, a man believed to be in his sixties, was treated for a hand injury.

“A woman passenger, also believed to be in her sixties, was treated for leg, back and neck pain.

Modern cars are so much safer than classic cars....

Yeti, Yeti, Bang Bang. I know, abominable.
Blokes classic car trashed by a Skoda - Old Navy
The Yeti was well T boned, no crumple zones on a vintage motor made out of girders and having less than modern brakes. The location looks like a road junction and no other vehicles mentioned.

>> The Yeti was well T boned,

Has there been any account of the crash? The photo tells one nothing. No indication as to what happened.

'Bloke's classic car' indeed! It's a real beauty. Such vehicles are usually very well and carefully driven.

It doesn't matter how well driven any car is if someone pulls out inside your stopping distance.

More to the point; many cars of that era have only got rear wheel brakes, and even those with four-wheel brakes do not stop as well as modern stuff. Trouble is that most drivers today simply do not realise this and fail to give the necessary courtesy.

>> More to the point; many cars of that era have only got rear wheel brakes,

I'm fairly sure that one would have four wheel brakes. But it's true it wouldn't stop as well as a modern disc braked, wide tyred jalopy, although it was a sporting car for very rich enthusiasts.

Perhaps the Yeti did pull out stupidly in front of it. But we haven't been told so, have we? There's a widespread moronic hostility to 'old cars', so perhaps the media want to obscure the real cause of the crash.

Nice 330 Touring. Don't suppose the police drive 335s do they?

"On 30-98s braking was a mechanical system with the pedal operating a transmission brake. The brakes on the rear wheels were controlled by a large lever (handbrake). Front-wheel brakes became available in late 1923, at first operated by Bowden double-cable but hydraulically from 1926.[1][16]

Brake drums were steel with a riveted cast iron liner. On some cars the drums were finned alloy again with a riveted cast iron liner. The final batch of cars used the 23-60 components and the front drums were very large, again with fins.

The transmission brake—given a slight lead when front brakes were fitted—in a drum behind the gearbox might have been adequate but it was usually full of oil that had leaked from the rear bearing. Then pressure on the pedal just produced a bad smell. A driver with the necessary skills—good hands and an understanding of the effects of the handbrake—could corner fast. Handbrake turns were available in wet weather. "In an emergency, however, braking was a waste of time, the driver must steer, change gear, jump out or pray—perhaps in that order."[1]

With the OE the three brake drums were switched to steel-lined aluminium drums well ribbed for cooling and linings were ferodo.[14] In 1923 a year after the OE's introduction mechanically operated front brakes were added and linked to the pedal which still operated the transmission brake.[4] In 1927 they were replaced by a notoriously temperamental hydraulic system from the pedal to the transmission and, again, just the front wheels.[1]

The hydraulic system introduced in 1927. Back brakes, expanding shoes in enclosed drums, are applied by rods from the hand lever outside the body on the off-side (to the driver's right). Four-wheel brakes actuated by the pedal through a master-plunger operate on the front wheels and on (the back wheels through) the transmission just behind the gearbox. On the front wheels the brakes expand internally within big ribbed enclosed drums and on the transmission the brake contracts. Operation is hydraulic, the transmission brake by having smaller pistons receives only a third of the force. The system is self-adjusting and self-compensating. Equalisation is ensured by the sizes of the plungers. Automatic adjustment is made by the action of a friction ring fitted in a recess in the plunger of the operating system. The front brakes are operated by a quick-thread screw formed by steel balls in grooves. The leading shoe in each wheel is arranged to come on slightly earlier and to release a shade before the other.[15]

On the off-side of the dash, under the bonnet, there is a pressurised oil reservoir maintained at about 7 lbs per sq. in. to prevent air getting into the system. A spare half-gallon of the special mixture was part of the equipment.[15]"

So a pretty sophisticated system for its time, but perhaps a trifle complicated. You wouldn't want to drive energetically as a novice.

Should old cars with inadequate braking systems be allowed on the public roads?

>> Should old cars with inadequate braking systems be allowed on the public roads?

Yes, the key word above is public, right to pass and re-pass on the Queen's highway and all that. How would you even define inadequate? Would a sixties car with drums all round and no servo pass muster. Even anything pre ABS/ESP?

There's no indication that accidents involving classic/vintage motors are a major issue, never mind that poor brakes are a significant contributor. If they were the insurers would be imposing conditions.

The A5 locally is being used by some classic run or another pretty much every weekend. It's the modern cars that end up in the fields or hedge bottoms.

Right to pass and repass etc applies to pedestrians horses etc but not cars. You need a licence to take a motorised vehicle on a public road. it is not a right.

Assuming everyone else has execlent brakes? No problem

Trouble is that most drivers today simply do not realise [that old cars have poor brakes] and fail to give the necessary courtesy.

I don't get this. Courtesy is not forcing another driver to use their brakes at all, not pulling out regardless and trusting that their hardware and vigilance will combine to stop them before they hit you.

Aye, all very well to say that while you're a Volvo / Merc man WDB. Once you get that little BMW...

I do not agree, the Yeti shows impact damage on the nearside, as does the Vauxhall on the offside front corner. In my opinion the Yeti pulled out of the road pictured behind both cars and was hit by the Vauxhall approaching from the right. This impact would push both cars to the position they are photographed in. Bearing in mind the construction of the Vauxhall it looks like a relatively low speed impact.

>> I do not agree,

Excellent news. We can disband all the accident investigation teams, do away with motorway closures, send a quick snap to the Matelot, reopen the road, and we can rely on instant cause of accident by return.

I think it was Sliding Pillar on another occasion who obseved that one has to be doubly cautious in an older car because other drivers often assume that one will be dawdling along at 20 and blithely pull straight out in front.

Yup. Same as they assume cyclists are not going much over walking pace.

Not sure I agree ON's analysis.

Location is here tinyurl.com/ozq9jeo. Both vehicles appear to have come to rest in the access road alongside Much Marcle Garage. I'd be thinking in terms of loss of control of the Yeti for reasons we cannot see in the Star's coverage.

Kerbed and over corrected is a pretty common cause for excursions into ditches and fields round here.

Got in one Zero, sort out the injured, shove the wreckage onto the hard shoulder, recover it when the road is quiet, and let the insurance companies sort out liability.

Ouch! I'm sure the car can be saved but it will probably double his classic car insurance to at least £150 pa.
