 Job vacancy - smokie
Anyone up for this one?

publicappointments.cabinetoffice.gov.uk/appointment/governor-of-the-bank-of-england/

The lunchtime TV news on the Beeb had a lady reporting on this, and she said there were two main roles - setting interest rates and keeping an eye on the banks. After some other waffle she went on to say there had never been a female BoE Governor, now maybe was the time.

I think I read somewhere that there are specialist headhunters already engaged. I must say I'd have thought at that level there would only be a fairly limited pool of eligible candidates, and that these would already be on someone's radar.

For me, I don't mind who gets the job but I do hope the appointment is done fairly and squarely on the basis of ability. and doesn't become a diversity box-ticking exercise just for it's own sake.

Oddly enough I saw this directly after reading an item in The Law Society Gazette about measures to increase diversity among the judiciary:

www.lawgazette.co.uk/practice/solicitors-targeted-in-judicial-diversity-drive/5070036.article?

I agree that only properly qualified and experienced people who have all the skills should be appointed and that we shouldn't lower standards in order to be inclusive. There is a real problem in the judiciary in ensuring people who might have everything it takes actually apply. While there is encouraging progress in the more junior posts, District and Tribunal Judges for example, the High Court Bench and above still have some way to go.

Sure, to some extent that reflects fact that some areas of the Bar still struggle with inclusivity today and it was far worse 25 years ago when today's candidates for office were called to the Bar. But that shouldn't stop them looking to widen the pool.

Maybe there's a similar issue with people who might be suitable for the Governorship?

I'd be very chary indeed of an assumption that all suitable people should be evident now. That's the sort of process that allows appointment of another white male who knows the right people, hob nobs in the right clubs etc.

They're right to cast the net wide.

It is a fact that some demographics are under represented in some roles and that needs not to be the case.

However, the seal needs to be broken. The only way that gender, for example, will not be taken into account is if previously the role has been previously held by both sexes. Only then will it feed all the way back down through to the starting roles. And the only way to get true equality at the bottom is to have it at the top. It doesn't work the other way around, that's just easier to try.

Unless you're fortunate, breaking that seal inevitably means at least once forcing a bias. Break it once, and going forward you will start choosing the best candidates. Until then you will inevitably stay within previous behaviours.

For me, I think it is worth forcing a person who is Black / Asian / Foreign / female / gay / [etc. and whatever] into a role simply to break that seal. There is a limit as to how much ability / suitability compromise should be made, but at least some is warranted.

Simplistically nobody will ever again argue about whether or not Dr. Who should be female, whether or not Jodie Whittaker is a good one this time.
