Doctors Attacked / Resigning - zippy
My daughter and her housemates are all junior doctors.

In A&E a couple of weeks ago, one of her housemates was attacked by a drunk patient who ripped her scrubs and tried to sexually assault her.

A quick stamp on the offenders foot and knee to the groin soon put a stop to his attack but she has been suspended whilst the investigation takes place.

The patient did need surgery on the kneed area as serious bleeding occurred.

Initially the police weren't interested in the attack by the patient, one did ask if the level of defense was appropriate given the attacker needed surgery!!!! The patient was arrested after he recovered from surgery.

Rather than go through the meetings and hearings having to defend her actions in protecting herself, she has just resigned and has been offered a position at a medical recruitment company, earning an salary in excess of what she is currently getting for less hours!

Luckily Miss Z has only had a few run-ins with difficult patients or their relatives including threats of violence but nothing to the level of her friend. She does get fed up with some of the older male patients and their antics and suggests bromide should be automatically added to their drips!

I have two relatives who are doctors and both can relate some horror tales of their time in A&E, mostly caused by drunks (Up to 75% of their input on a weekend).

Anyone assaulting a doctor or nurse who are carrying out their duties should get an automatic jail sentence to reflect the scum that they are.

I think that is what I would do aswell!! - personally' I have never witnessed such behavior in the many hospital visits made, but then I've never been in A+E on a fri/sat night!

My late Mother used to work as a "Night-care" nurse at a Mental Hosp, She often used to come home with cuts/bruises/scratches, but never complained nor took it further (neither did the N.H.S). She seemed to "accept " it as part of the job! times change!

I had a girlfriend who was an A&E Doctor in Portsmouth.

The behaviour of the drunken animals is quite beyond belief. They really should be left in a pile to rot outside.

Just part of the idiotic drinking culture we have in the UK where masculinity of young men is judged by how much you can drink. Been like that for centuries though

Drunkenness is not unknown in the medical profession either

Drunk men are tiresomely predictable and fairly easy to manage psychologically or physically.

Drunk women once worked into a frenzy need shot.

They could be caged while recovering, as in many American films, before being treated. Some however need on-the-spot attention, for example, those who are likely to vomit and inhale their vomit, hence choking to death but I suppose it would be dangerous to administer a preliminary knock-out injection in such cases.

Lygonos beat me to it. Drunken/drugged woman are seriously worse than men.

It is a real shame that your daughter has chosen to change her career path after all the investment and work she has undertaken so far. I can understand though why she has made that decision.

It is a sign of the times that her reaction is being questioned and investigated to the nth degree but that is the public sector for you. Frightened of their own shadows. They will make a meal of it.
Unfortunately whatever the demeanor the patient has to be pandered to just in case there is some underlying issue and then the 9 X 5 shudders will have a field day. This only encourages them and boosts there belief in their entitlement.

Back in the day our local A&E was a regular T spot on nights. This was before the need for private security. Many a time there were instances where the staff were abused by drunks. Great pleasure was taken, on hearing the commotion, in seeing their faces as we tipped up within seconds. They were quickly dealt with by the staff and robustly removed.

I wish her the best whatever path she chooses.

Totally appreciate your sentiments FC but it’s the housemate that’s quitting.

Miss Z intends to stay and has just passed the first Royal College of Surgeons exam.

She is taking self defence classes though.

Oh yeah that's what you did say :S RTFQ!

In my defence I was up at 03.00 UK time to catch a flight back from Malta.

A friend of mine is/was a ticket inspector, diligent in his duties even on late night trains when many seem to shirk and are never seen.
Some people are happy drunks. Some are downright nasty. This particular drunk picked a fight with my friend and came off badly. Very badly. My pals attitude was put him out of action because there is only a slim chance of help until the next station. You can’t always hope a Good Samaritan will step up.
He got hauled before a tribunal, dismissed from his role, but was offered a different job by the train franchise, albeit on more unsociable shifts and less pay.

This sounds similar in a way to the London traffic cops who are now being charged for knocking the poor scooter scum from their bikes.

Not sure if you've seen the posters that used to be up in hospitals warning about not tolerating abuse to staff, well where I am they've been taken down as apparently the last lot of management said it gave out the 'wrong impression' to visitors.

Cleft stick.

On the one hand you make it clear abuse and other unacceptable behaviour will not be tolerated and where it is exhibited the offender risks being denied service and being 'asked' to leave the premises.

On the other hand such notices are seen as unfriendly and carrying the message that any form of dissent or questioning might result in service being denied.

I favour the first option combined with a protocol about warnings etc. My adviser training included dealing with offensive punters and how to deliver negative advice tactfully.

We probably have three or four cases a year where people take profound and loud objection to the advice proffered and end up being escorted out. I've had one or two walk out uttering profanities when told, however carefully, that they're authors of their own misfortune.

Similarly, I spent several years surveying power lines and at one stage, electricity poles carried the yellow warning triangle "Danger of death; do not climb". These had to be taken down and replaced with signs that said simply "Danger of death" because the inclusion of the words 'Do not climb' could put the idea of climbing the pole into the heads of certain idiots. Of course, said idiots are perhaps best removed from the gene pool anyway - electrocution being one method.

There's a sitting MP, who as a councillor was, allegedly, involved in similar vote rigging.

Happens a lot in my neighbouring borough, its an issue in high immigrant areas*, so Woking is one of those that introduced some from of verifiable ID to vote.

*Thats not a racist comment, it is factual, and can arise in that situation where english is not a first language, and "head of household" intimidation persists.

Agree with generality there. I'd add though that a head of household culture isn't necessarily limited to those without good english (even if other languages prevail at home), neither does a such culture need to involve intimidation.

It's a culturalist comment, Zeddo; don't worry about it, just learn to embrace it.

By the way, I think a couple of threads have crossed.

In UK, attacking doctors is a rare event.

In many other parts of the world, it is very common.

Currently lot of doctors in India are on strike to protest patients relatives attacking them on a regular basis. There the attackers are not drunk by the way.

Which is why I wrote Que? in my post at 09.47 this morning.

A child in my village was electrocuted to death in that way. I don't think he was any more of an idiot than most, just an adventurous lad of about 10 I think. Unbelievably sad for his parents.

Funny thing, evolution. The same mechanism that eliminates the 'unfit' people also lets through the successful risk-takers and explorers, some of whom have perhaps made great contributions to the sum of our knowledge and advancement. Then there's Trump.
