IIRC they provided a service for my then employer in early eighties. Staff filled in forms, Data Processors keyed the data which was then transferred to tape and couriered to EDS to be processed overnight.
Output delivered following day with updated records on microfiche. The Microfiche Reader Printer devices were the devil's work. Used some evil smelling toner and produced prints like early photocopies - not fast to light so they faded if left by a window. HArd copies for permanent records were printed separately off site.
Later, 1986, we got an in-house system that ran on dumb terminals with lurid green CRT displays. These were prone to phospor burnout so some messages were permanently visible.
