No, they didn't. He did say "lubricate the thrust bearing" but if you look at the one he had in his hand as he said that, it is new. If you watch carefully you can see him take it from the polythene wrapper.

They did not.
Inconsistencies, such as they are, arise from the editing not the actual activities, in my opinion.
This series has to be watched as a couple of blokes, not professionals, tarting up old bangers and then selling them as tarted up bangers.
Once you do that the annoying things become less annoying and more the laughable antics of bodgers which you may well have indulged in yourself [I have]. Usually it's their antics around paintwork which are the most toe-curling. When I think back to my own youth I was pretty competent at any level of mechanicals or electricals, but I probably b*ggered up just about every piece of bodywork I ever touched.
As an entertainment show I must say it is growing on me. I have watched all the episodes and it is improving all the time.
