 Cagoule. - Bromptonaut
Is the word in the thread title a mystery to any members?

Went to the British Museum this afternoon and, entirely reasonably, had to open my back pack for security. As well as my tablet and a notebook it contained a waterproof coat.

Security guy asks me what the mustard coloured thing is and I say it's a Cagoule. Met with total blank expression; had to pull it out and show it.

Is the term regional or has it become dated?
 Cagoule. - Dieselboy
Just dated, I think. I used to hate being made to wear a cagoule as a child. Even the word makes me shudder!
 Cagoule. - CGNorwich
I think rain jacket would be the more common expression.

Dont you wear a Gilet under your cagoule?
 Cagoule. - Andrew-T
>> Don't you wear a Gilet under your cagoule? >>

Gilet is a French word which we have adopted for a warm garment commonly without sleeves. As an orienteer for 50 years I am used to carrying a cagoule, which is not padded, but water- and windproof (ideally) to be used if one gets injured and has to await rescue. Funnily enough I was wearing an orange one this morning :-)

The word may not be new but I don't think it is obsolete or obsolescent. Ignorance of it just shows ignorance.

Bivvy bag or emergency blanket?

I think it's increasingly out of date/disappearing. People in their 40/50s would probably remember the word from childhood. Younger than that, as per the first post, lots of blank looks.

Its the new spelling of Misnomer, for us non cagule modern types.

You cagule of course hangs in your 1960/70's stripped notty pine wardrobe. Your Dryrobe hangs in your Ikea PAX HOKKSUND wardrobe.
 Cagoule. - PeterS
If you asked me what a cagoule was I’d say a waterproof jacket with a hood, which is put on over one’s head as one would a sweatshirt, with no zip/fastening at the front. But, I’ve haven’t heard anyone refer to a coat as a cagoule (and wasn’t there a spelling with a ‘K’ as well?) since the 70’s / early ‘80s, so I can easily see that for anyone under 50 the world would be met with a quizzical look. I wouldn’t say that was ignorance though; it’s a generic name for a niche type of clothing that was launched 60 years and is seldom warn by anyone under 40!

Rohan have added a Gliet at a cool £130:

www.rohan.co.uk/men-s-vindur-gilet-black/

Not remotely interesting at that price, see what one costs in the sale.

Bags travel trousers at £32 in the Boxing Day sale were a steal.

Very dated, i doubt many under SPA use the word.

SPA ?
Craven Brew Co make a very acceptable SPA beer, as per their pump clip.

Over the head thing?

I'd recognise that and the item under discussion has a full zip and Gore Tex type breathability so perhaps not strictly a cagoule. But it was the blank expression that got me.
 Cagoule. - Bobby
The 7 of us all had a cagoule when we went caravanning in the 70s/80s.
The type that had a big square “pocket” on the front that the cagoule folded into when being packed away.

Just back from a week in Lanzarote and glad I had my more modern cagoule with me.
 Cagoule. - Bromptonaut

This waterproof is branded as 'packpocket' and turns inside out into its own map pocket.

Those here who who've read of my clothing choices will know the make - Rohan.

Not cheap but I've a near identical one owned since c1995 that's still in the caravan as a precaution for running to the bogs or washup when it's peeing down.

What's a 'dry robe'?

I'd an idea it was something for swimmers or dogs.

can be, but now universally a warm waterproof long coat that you can go to the block in to do whatever you want, usually still wearing your jim jams. or your footie gear in the dugout, or judging a dog show in the pouring rain

So it's just a long cagoule with a different name so you youngsters don't feel embarrassed talking about it ?

Always associated the word with thin plastic emergency jackets, wasn't 'pack A mac' a brand of cagoule?

Not to be confused of course with a Caramac
 Cagoule. - Andrew-T

Way back when the Pacamac brand was introduced, it was a variety of what everyone called simply a Plastic (i.e.PVC) Mac. I remember my dad getting one, probably about 1950. PVC was pretty new stuff for the masses back then.

No its padded and warm with a floofy lining.

The Dry Robe was indeed first invented for swimmers. The lining isn't just warm fluffy stuff, it's towelling so that a swimmer can put it on straight over their swimming costume to dry off quickly.

However, the brand became fashionable for some bizarre reason and people (by which I mean fashion victims and those who don't care how ridiculous they look, ok same thing) started buying them to wear as outdoor coats over their ordinary clothing.

£150 is what they are.

Actually if you aren't cold water swimmer then going to the caravan club showers is about the only application for them.

The essential feature of a cagoule is a hood. Indeed the word comes from the French for hood or cow.

Origins: Originally designed for workers on the Manchester Ship Canal, the name likely stems from the "donkey engines" they operated.

Much as I disliked Foot, he was unjustly treated. It certainly wasn't a donkey jacket.
 Cagoule. - Terry

Apparently a duffel coat. Nonetheless Mr Foot was hardly a leading exponent of sartorial elegance - although dress sense is not a prerequisite for political competence.

yep i gotta donkey jacket as well. inherited it years back . i considerd it too good to wear as a working jacket. Just wear it now very occasionally when i feel the need. had one as a 16-year-old. loved the deep side pockets

And what about Crombies ? I vaguely remember myself & friends connecting with girls from the adjacent RC College….at parties we wore crombies, Ben Sherman checks and
stay prest trousers. We were 17 with it coming out of our ears, especially down the Elmer disco on a Sunday night before school on Monday. Probably sipping Double Diamond or Vodka.

Much credit to my parents who must have known what was going on at the time.

>> And what about Crombies ?

Currently in my wardobe is a Crombie(style) coat (black), several Ben Sherman oxford shirts (the classic button down collars with back pleat), and a pair of kempton loafers (the ones with a tassle) in ox blood. (to be worn with white socks of course)

No Levi Sta Press tho

In 6th form I was having driving lessons once a week with a Triumph Toledo. Left school just before I turned 18 and spent all summer working…the usual student jobs and caddying evenings.
No gap year :-)
Friends mother had a Lancia Fulvia coupe and gfs mother an Opel Kadett coupe. I lusted after both but bought a second hand Mini Clubman estate.
Must have had a cagoule but definitely remember bright yellow Helly Hansen non breathable waterproofs. And a Blacks orange mountain tent with tunnel entrance and twin A poles which i sold 30 + years later as a collectors item.

Have one in my boot. It might be 60 years old. Just in case I get a puncture. Keeps you dry, windproof. And clean

Two in our boot, as well as builders kneepads for kneeling for those times I might need them, as well as Hi Vis jackets in the back seat pockets (accessible) and a distress beacon.

Is that for all emergencies?

Or only those involving public transport vehicles?

Hmm?
 Cagoule. - R.P.
I would spell it with a "k" much used term for a pullover waterproof lightweight jacket. I have an old Honda branded one in the car for emergency use. I use the term gillet as my woife uses it. I'd call it a waistcoat. I have a rather nice one from Buffalo. Reminded myself,I have a Buffalo Kagoule somewhere.....must dig it out. (It was issued to my wife whn she was in the Police)

kagoul
in British English
or kagoule (kəˈɡuːl IPA Pronunciation Guide)
noun
variant spellings of cagoule

Seems my mental spelling wasn't wrong
 Cagoule. - R.P.
Triggered a memory ! Blue Peter Storm kagoule in the late 70s from a hill-walking shop. My elder sister had one and I had a second hand biker's leather jacket. As much as I cherished the biker's jacket I really wanted a Kagoule all of my own along with the iconic PS badge. Like many other brands is still around but the brand has been diluted to the cheap end. Buffalo trade their waistcoats as "Gilet" one l. They should know to be fair.
