Sat 24 Jan 26 18:16   Cagoule. - Bromptonaut

Is the word in the thread title a mystery to any members? Went to the British Museum this afternoon and, entirely reasonably, had to open my back pack for security. As well as my tablet and a notebook it contained a waterproof coat. Security guy asks me what the mustard coloured thing is and I say it's a Cagoule. Met with total blank expression; had to pull it out and show it. Is the term regional or has it become dated? Reply to this message | Report message

As an orienteer for 50 years I am used to carrying a cagoule, which is not padded, but water- and windproof (ideally) to be used if one gets injured and has to await rescue. Funnily enough I was wearing an orange one this morning :-) The word may not be new but I don't think it is obsolete or obsolescent. Ignorance of it just shows ignorance. People in their 40/50s would probably remember the word from childhood. Younger than that, as per the first post, lots of blank looks. Bit like using the word wireless for radio. If you asked me what a cagoule was I’d say a waterproof jacket with a hood, which is put on over one’s head as one would a sweatshirt, with no zip/fastening at the front. But, I’ve haven’t heard anyone refer to a coat as a cagoule (and wasn’t there a spelling with a ‘K’ as well?) since the 70’s / early ‘80s, so I can easily see that for anyone under 50 the world would be met with a quizzical look. I wouldn’t say that was ignorance though; it’s a generic name for a niche type of clothing that was launched 60 years and is seldom warn by anyone under 40! Reply to this message | Report message

I'd recognise that and the item under discussion has a full zip and Gore Tex type breathability so perhaps not strictly a cagoule. But it was the blank expression that got me. The 7 of us all had a cagoule when we went caravanning in the 70s/80s. The type that had a big square “pocket” on the front that the cagoule folded into when being packed away. Just back from a week in Lanzarote and glad I had my more modern cagoule with me. Reply to this message | Report message

This waterproof is branded as 'packpocket' and turns inside out into its own map pocket. Those here who who've read of my clothing choices will know the make - Rohan. The lining isn't just warm fluffy stuff, it's towelling so that a swimmer can put it on straight over their swimming costume to dry off quickly. However, the brand became fashionable for some bizarre reason and people (by which I mean fashion victims and those who don't care how ridiculous they look, ok same thing) started buying them to wear as outdoor coats over their ordinary clothing. Left school just before I turned 18 and spent all summer working…the usual student jobs and caddying evenings. No gap year :-) Friends mother had a Lancia Fulvia coupe and gfs mother an Opel Kadett coupe. I lusted after both but bought a second hand Mini Clubman estate. Must have had a cagoule but definitely remember bright yellow Helly Hansen non breathable waterproofs. I would spell it with a "k" much used term for a pullover waterproof lightweight jacket. I have an old Honda branded one in the car for emergency use. I use the term gillet as my woife uses it. I'd call it a waistcoat. I have a rather nice one from Buffalo. Reminded myself,I have a Buffalo Kagoule somewhere.....must dig it out. Triggered a memory ! Blue Peter Storm kagoule in the late 70s from a hill-walking shop. My elder sister had one and I had a second hand biker's leather jacket. As much as I cherished the biker's jacket I really wanted a Kagoule all of my own along with the iconic PS badge. Like many other brands is still around but the brand has been diluted to the cheap end. Buffalo trade their waistcoats as "Gilet" one l. They should know to be fair.
