Probably the first biggy was the conversion of all our systems (which were data hungry) from ICL1900 to ICL2900 platform, which you would have thought should have been easy, but they have different architectures and file systems.
All the files were "transformed" using specialist software from a San Francisco based outfit, which ran on IBM 360 machines.
The most complex part was defining "mapping" rules to convert from old to new, but once done and tested, the process was entirely repeatable and consistent.
I can't believe similar facilities don't still exist, after all that was over 40 years ago.
