In my last job (this was about 6 years ago) I worked on a major bank's desktop refresh which was using a piece of 3rd party software on it's front-office PCs which depended on (I think) EGA screen standards, with corresponding dependencies in the back end software.
The machines we were migrating to didn't support EGA and it caused no end of problems. The 3rd party had no-one with the detailed knowledge of how the product had been built, so what should have been a fairly cheap and cheerful upgrade took months and a bucket load of money. We did look at installing additional graphics cards but the bank decided against that.
