Direct Line offered a renewal for the SAAB at £272.91 - up from £237.25 last year.

Through the Meercats, found a quote from Aviva at £228.

When I called Direct Line, immediately reduced to £225.

It amazes me the amount of people who just pay the renewal quote without quibbling it or shopping round first.

I actually did that last month for the first time ever!

I've always set aside a couple of hours a month ahead of the renewal date to plough through all the comparison websites before buying insurance, and have rarely gone with the same company two years in a row.

This year, having read tales of doom and gloom and price rises in the press, I wasn't too surprised to see a renewal quote of £280-odd for the Yeti that cost £253 last year. I know I took the time a year ago to choose the right add-ons and check the insurer's reviews, so the 10% uplift seemed fair. A 10-minute run through one of the comparison sites proved that there wasn't much good quality cover available for under £300 so I just renewed it and got on with other stuff.
